Has anyone had a low platelet count of just 1?

Posted by johnbowrey @johnbowrey, May 19, 2024

I developed a bleeding mouth problem a few days ago followed quickly by leg rashes and bruising. Blood test gave doctors a surprise as it was only ONE … put on immunoglobulin drip (8 bottles) then a cocktail if pills (haven’t got names yet) and next day I was up to a count of FIVE. Hospital staff say they’ve not seen such a low count. Anyone else out there with similar? Any advice welcome.

I am scheduled to have a bone marrow biopsy on June 27.

May you have an easy and productive biopsy.

Hi, I have also had such low platelet count. I have ITP, and unfortunately that's not that uncommon for cases like mine. You may have the same diagnosis, as you were given immunoglobulin and your count improved. The pills you were given were likely immunosuppressants. Please keep us posted, so we can keep in touch about it, if that's the case!

Also, you may be undergoing several tests in order to rule out other possible diagnosis. Blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy.

This is what I was referring to, earlier post above.....
A week of doxycycline doubled my dog's platelets so she could have her nails trimmed by the Vet technician. I wasn't going to risk quicking her when her platelets were at 38.

Gosh, wish I could give you some of mine. 1? Just how can you survive? Mine toped at 2057 but now I feel good about a count of 600 - low 700s. I wish you good luck with your meds and again, I wish I could share some of mine.

My husband has MDS. After several cycles of vidaza he was experiencing platelet counts in the single digits and had a one count at least twice. He needed transfusions of platelets sometimes three times a week for about two months. His counts have improved a lot but still low (90) after six cycles of vidaza with added venetoclax. We are supposed to be headed to stem cell transplant.
Hope things improve for you. I always find it unnerving when medical staff say they’ve never seen anything like it 😞

If I remember correctly the lowest my husband got was 11 and yes a lot of transfusions. It seems like it took forever to get higher than 50 and then 100 and still today he is only 163 over a year out of transplant.

I have been receiving platelets as my platelets went down to 5. Blisters in my mouth are the worst. I am averaging a bag of platelets a week. now. I'm looking forward to my bone marrow transplant so my platelets will start building!

Susan...I had mine on April 9th. I feel blessed i had a 26 yr old young man that was a 10 out of 10 match. Not everyone needs as BMT, but for those who do need them, it is a new life.

I am on my 28 cycle with Vidaza.
All my labs counts were low including platelets and hemoglobin. It took about 4-5 months to really start responding and get my lab counts back up to where they should be. I started with transfusions initially as my hemoglobin was at 7….now it is at 13.7….give it some time… we all respond differently…all the best to you.

I am 44 years old. A month ago, I was admitted to the hospital with a platelet count of 1. On the first day, they gave me one unit of platelets. It was measured the next morning and was still 1. On the second day, they gave me another unit of platelets. The result on the second day was 3.

Then they gave me 6 units of IVIG. I had no allergic reactions during this process. The values were 48, 95, and 130, respectively. Since the beginning of the treatment, I have been taking 4*16 mg of cortisone every day. I am also taking B12, folic acid, and calcium supplements. I also take extra stomach protectors.

I had no complaints. On the day I went to the hospital, I saw blood blisters on my tongue, so I went to the hospital. On the same day, I had a slight nosebleed again. My arms and neck started to bruise while I was in the hospital. Then these symptoms disappeared. I am still taking 4*16 mg of cortisone.

About a week before going to the hospital, I had a viral infection. It lasted 2 days, with nausea and fever. During other flu episodes I had this year, I used Ibuprofen irregularly. Also, I had two molars extracted this year and used Augmentin during that process. I don't know if there is a connection, but I read notes in articles I saw suggesting it might be related.

The last time I had it measured, my platelet count was 37. I will go for a checkup in two weeks, and if there is improvement, they will reduce the medication dose. I was diagnosed with ITP. How did your process continue?
