Continuing To Learn About Aquablation

Posted by Phil, Alumni Mentor @upstatephil, Jul 26, 2024

Yesterday, I visited the mothership in Jacksonville for a routine follow-up to the aquablation procedure I underwent in February 2024. I first had a flow test to check two things: (1) Is my improved urine flow of sufficient volume? (2) Is my bladder emptying sufficiently.

Afterward, I visited with my aquablation urologist. I appreciate this level of Mayo attention to detail and follow-up. All part of why I believe Mayo stands-out as best-in-class medical care.

For me - all tests were passed and we agreed my follow-up would be in two more years. I explained to Dr. Dora all my aquablaton expectations had been met or exceeded: (1) Almost no times where the urgency to urinate is severe. (2) Flow starts very quickly. (3) Flow volume is noticeably stronger. (4) There is no dribbling or leakage between bathroom stops. (5) Retro-grade ejaculation associated with BPH drugs has been reversed (pun intended). In all...a perfect ten out of ten.

Dr. Helmand of Northwest Hospitals in Chicgaoland has preformed over 500 aquablations. He believes 10-15 procedures provides competency. It can be done after radiotherapy or before also. It works on very large prostates as well 200cc even.

Thank you for sharing. Think it’s important for those considering aquablation to insist on learning how many procedures his surgeon has performed. At one time the manufacturer provided a troresentative to be on hand to assist for the first number if procedures.

Well I found out now after looking at some from BCBS statements that my doctor did not do the surgery, they have another provider's name who was a 4th year resident (resident for sure, I think I heard 4th year, has MD after name). They woke me up while I been under anesthesia and stuck this tablet over my head and said I had to sign. I made some marks, didn't really know what was going on. Then as I was going back under, I seen this other doctor down there ask if he ever done this surgery before, but went back under. Think he said 30 times??
Anyway, I have document proof that the provider that is on BCBS bill is not who was suppose to do the surgery. Still can't get KUMC to show me documents I signed, I do remember they were on an electronic.
Maybe that is why surgery didn't work and the excuse I was giving why there was just some tough tissue still in there. This process of waking me up to sign and changing surgeons just doesn't seem right.
So maybe I shouldn't be saying negative things about aquablation, it could be other reasons things didn't go well? I am pretty mad about the whole process and disappointed in the facility.

Thank you again for sharing your experience. It’s a good lesson for all of us to make sure we understand how our surgery will be handled and who will be performing it. Never hesitate to ask ANY question you might have about health care you are receiving. Thanks sgain.

I finely got the document I signed. Well not really a document, when they woke me up and actually for everything I signed, there were 4 documents. Anyway I never seen a document, they had a tablet over my head with a signature box and that is all I could see. Didn't see or read the other 10 plus pages. I guess except for the time they woke me up I could have scrolled through the document, but didn't realize it was a long document, all I seen was a signature block on tablet while laying around naked. Seems all this signing should take place prior to getting prep and undressed??
Anyway after reading one of the documents, I could hardly believe it. Will try to post a part below, basically my surgeon didn't need to be in same room, could be off doing surgery elsewhere. It will show up if clicked on, just doesn't seem right that this is allowed. Maybe it's normal, I just don't know. I just know I been through a lot and not any better and a bit worse.

Thank you again for sharing. Im sure a good attorney could help you argue that the conditions under which you signed your name do not constitute informed consent. I would suggest your next step might be more watchful waiting for a time. If at some point you would like more to be done you could discuss your options with an attorney or perhaps with your health care insurance provider.

I am 78 and on Medicare, I doubt they care. I only ever had one other surgery and it was also at KUMC for ankle replacement. I said same thing I wanted the surgeon I had been working with to do the job and he did . For that surgery, I just signed a paper document (no tablet with signature box). I am writing up something for what they call patient advocate to see what they say.
Good to see there are folks that are having good results. Hope all of you continue to improve.
