Slow gi motility with severe constipation

Posted by sallyw133 @sallyw133, Feb 28, 2023

I’ve posted here before under other topics but decided to start my own thread. Diagnosed three years ago
With extremely slow gi motility, stomach down, but symptoms primarily in colon which takes 82 hrs to process. Been to numerous drs, including motility specialists, and just no relief. Also claim some pelvic floor issues so I’ve done therapy twice. My main problem is finding a regimen to maintain some kind of regularity. I’m on Bethanichol, normally for urinary retention, but helps with motility, and Amitiza daily. Then add in mineral oil, senna, dulcolax as needed. The dailies help some, but not enough, so gradually add in others, then diarrhea. Or increase dose if dailies and same. Then there’s the “is it diarrhea or overflow” issue? My gi is little help. All questions go through nurse who never gets details right or doesn’t call back for days. I’d switch, but I have no idea who else to go to as can’t go to just a regular gi. I have been on every constipation med and have even consulted a surgeon re an ileostomy, but that just sounds like a whole new group of problems. Any one there share these issues?

I just started having slow motility problems 3 months ago, and the only thing that worked for 3 months was a whole bottle of miralax every 8 to 10 days, then 18 days ago it stopped working, I've seen 3 GI Drs already, I've been to the ER 8 times in a week and a half, I went into lactic acid shock on the 10th , I'm trying to find a hospital that will admit me and help me with this partial blockage, the hospital I was at yesterday gave me 8 laxatives a bottle of magnesium citrate, my bowels moved but nothing but overflow came out, today I have pressure, I hope I'm not perferated, this is the 5th hospital I've been to in 18 days. I need to go back to work, I'm going to end up losing my house, but half the time I can barely walk.

@cpeffer - you truly have so much going on.

I wanted to offer one potential resource for you:

- Check out https://www.findhelp.org/. FindHelp is a place to find free or reduced-cost resources like food, housing, financial assistance, legal assistance, health care, and much more. Simply enter your zip code to find resources close to you.

I realize perhaps even navigating a search tool like FindHelp can be overwhelming. I recommend starting by looking for social work. Perhaps you can find a low cost or no cost social support who could help coordinate services with you.

Thank you. I located a new GI surgeon. He is doing EGD for biopsies and colonoscopy to address ischemic colitis and possible surgery. I am following the diet every day. I am going trying!!!!!
Blessings to all!

Lisa Lucier, thanks I will try to get some help, I just had my gastro Dr reach out to a Penn State Hershey Medical Center, and they are going to try to help me, they are an hour away and I have to wait until 3 for my wife to get home. But I went to 3 hospitals yesterday, had lactic shock again, and all three hospitals, discharged me. UPMC memorial gave me some Klonopin and said sorry we can't do anything for you. I went to Hanover Pinnacle, And wellspan York, They all said theres nothing we can do. So I just kept calling my on call gastro Dr. He kept telling me to just try another hospital, he said they aren't supposed to turn you away. I said well they did. And York set off a sepsis alert again because of my vitals and my lactic acid spiking again.I PRAY TO GOD IM NOT PERFERATED. its been 19 days

I also pray it is not perforated! Let’s just “put out to the universe “ that today is the day! My lactic acid has remained low. What is lactic shock? Educate me please! Remember, my esophagus, sphincter and stomach are crap. Barrett’s. The redundant colon and colitis is new. I want to hear how they helped you! Kit

Hi, @bcinc042 - this very short book, published online in StatPearls, talks a bit (in medical professional language) about lactic shock, also called lactic acidosis:

- Lactic Acidosis https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK470202/
