Alcohol and Radiation Treatment

Posted by rbtsch1951 @rbtsch1951, Sep 6, 2025

Has anyone received specific instructions regarding alcohol intake prior to and during SBRT? Instructions from my radiation oncologist make no mention of alcohol one way or another, though online materials suggest abstinence before and during RT. I am, of course, asking only about modest alcohol ingestion as in 1 or 2 cocktails or glasses of wine on occasion.

That is technically water goblet and not wine glass ; )

If I pour coffee in a martini glass, it does not make it a "coffee mug"🙃

Absolutely, but I’ve seen people drinking wine from glasses like this, both half full (8 oz) and even full. Some restaurants serve wine in glasses that are even bigger but only fill them halfway. It is like the normal size glass for a beer in parts of Germany is a half liter, with full liters available. My point is that when people say they only have one or two glasses of wine or beer, size matters. 😂

Thanks everyone for your input. I have had no alcohol since knowing RT was planned.

Had my SpaceOar instilled this AM and have my radiation planning images this afternoon. SBRT to start 9/18.

I do appreciate everyone’s personal impressions, but the question was if anyone had specific instructions from their Radiation Oncologist (or knew of any specific studies documenting an adverse impact of modest drinking on RT).

It seems everyone who has responded has made a personal choice, all of which is fair.

I would clarify, though, that many people who choose an occasional cocktail or glass of wine have no difficulty limiting their intake to a measured pour.

Several of us have said that we got no specific instructions or even mention of appropriate alcohol intake from our radiation oncologist or techs during treatment.

I enjoy a drink and did ask the nurse whether it was ok to drink during proton beam treatment and she said it was not a problem. Based on this, I had a drink on the Friday evening of the first week (treatment started on the Wednesday) and consumed quite a few scotches. Big mistake. Terrible, terrible hangover the next morning and didn’t drink at all after that.

As far as radiation goes, alcohol should really have no adverse effect. It’s the addition of ADT that makes it risky due to the hormonal effects on liver enzymes.
My PA told me right off the bat to avoid alcohol completely while on Orgovyx.
Glad I did since 2 enzymes really climbed during treatment.

Unfortunately booze, as in wine, left my taste buds early on in my aPC journey. With one exception. Whenever my son visits we always go out for a beer and burger. I live in a college town with plenty of both. He'll have a couple of frosty's (Beers in a chilled pint class) I'll have a juice glass, just one, of his beer. Always IPA, always wonderful sips.
I am 4.9 years into the journey, it equals about every one juice glass every two months.
