Sense of smell and taste returned after 3.5 years

Posted by firemanmono @firemanmono, May 12 10:48am

Just for those who were in my same boat...I'm a fireman, I lost my smell and taste on November 21, 2021 during covid. My smell and taste returned abruptly on May 09, 2025. I pretty much had near zero smell or taste from the above mentioned date. What was strange is i could smell the chlorine in city water, which my peers couldn't smell. And lettuce had a stong lettuce smell. Other then that, I could not smell structure fire, decay, or anything else. The morning of May 9th 2025 whilst setting up an agility test I smelled grass. After the testing I immediately came to the kitchen and could smell everything in the fridge, coffee, ect..so anyone who has not had their senses return, I just wanted to share my story to let you know there's still hope. God bless

Firemanmono, That is wonderful! Long Haul Covid has a mind of it's own, doesn't it?

Coffee has never tasted the same since having COVID for a 2nd time in 2023.

Sometimes I think COVID issues have to run their course.

Blessings & Prayers....

I lost my sense of smell after a very brief bout with COVID back in 2021. I did not notice I lost it until a week after my recovery. I put on my perfume and couldn’t smell it! I ran to kitchen and opened every bottle, etc. and could smell nothing!

People were stating at that time that the best thing to do is get lemon and eucalyptus oil and smell them throughout the day. I don’t know if that helped or if it was just time, but my smell sensation came back completely in several months. I am so happy that yours did too. The human body is a mystery in many ways.

Frighting not being able to smell as a fire fighter! I’m so happy it came back suddenly!

I also lost taste and smell 2021 Thanksgiving. Taste returned before smell. I’d say my smell is probably 85-90% back after almost 4 years, but still waiting and working on full recovery. I’m a Massage Therapist and use essential oils in my practice and often I can’t identify the fragrance without seeing the label on the bottle. Thank you for your post as it gives me more hope❣️

Sheamichelle, thank you for sharing as well. The situation with your essential oils would be a rough one! I've noticed a few minor anomalies like skunk smells like hot asphalt for example..which may be a good thing. Ha! I hope you hit 100% return of your senses. Thank you again.

Firemanmono, I’m so happy for you. This gives me hope. I lost taste and smell three years ago from Covid. I’m a 76 y/o grandma. Fingers crossed that the holiday meals I serve are ok. I don’t have a clue!
