Evenity Injection Site Pain and The Next Step

So sorry to hear that, @maymore …were the first two injections also difficult? I’m facing this decision myself — Evenity, Tymlos, Reclast, Prolia. They’re all scary…would love to hear from anyone who’s been through these treatments without severe issues.

Yes, they were difficult, but each got progressively worse.

I just received my first set of Evenity injections. They were given in the back of my upper arms. The first injection was the most painful injection I have ever received and I've had biopsy injections for breast cancer, abdominal Lovenox injections, heparin Etc. The first arm was excruciating. I was actually screaming, trying to pull away and it took forever. It was so painful we waited a bit for the second arm and that wasn't nearly as bad and took half of the time. I suspect the Evenity hadn't sat out at all because the medical representative that did the injections told me when I came into the room that she needed to go get approval from the doctor to release the medication so I suspect it came out of refrigeration just before being injected. I appreciate the comments and insight here, based on what I've read I'm going to insist that the medication has sat out for at least 30 minutes before administered next month. I experienced absolutely no sight pain after the fact in either arm, so for that I'm grateful. Here's hoping next month is a better experience! Sending wishes for good health to all of you!

I’m sorry your first injection was so painful. I’ve had four now and the amount of pain I’ve had during the injection has varied. The first stung a bit, the second was excruciating, the third was almost completely painless, and the fourth was painful only in one arm. I am not sure how long the medication sat out during the first two but I know it was out for at least fifteen minutes during the last two.

The third injection occurred at the end of an interview with the doctor so I suspect it had been out the longest. I agree with you that the temperature of the medication may be factor in how painful the injection is.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I know I have read that the Medication should be removed from refrigeration 30 minutes before administering. I will definitely insist on that and post the result.

I am on my 3rd shot and I can let you know the abdomen has been the only place I can handle the pain. I lay back in the chair and 2 nurses stick me at the same time. It hurts like the Dickens but after a few hours of laying down and ice packs I can manage life. I would 10000% recommend taking the shot into the abdomen, another thing is to make sure they are taking the medication out 30min before you arrive, I was told if the medication isn't room temperature it can hurt even more. Heat packs, cold packs, and no bending over for a day is what I can recommend if you take the shot in the abdomen. The best of luck!

Fifth shots coming up soon. Have only done abdomen. I was told that back of arms has pain and I go to a work out class the day after the shots. I also wait 10 to 15 min after. Was told I can leave, I have been known to faint after shots, so I choose to wait. The nurses are wonderful about it and bring me water and granola bars. I just want to make sure I can drive home.
Only other side effect is some fatigue for a few days.

Yes. You get have them in your arms, thighs or stomach. I did the first set in my arms and I switched to my abdomen due to the pain and swelling in my arms which kept me awake for two nights. So far my abdomen feels fine. Some swelling but not painful.

I have commented earlier. I did 11 months of Evenity with injections in my arms. Injections were a bit painful but tolerable and arms felt fine after a couple of day. However, my bigger concern was the muscle and bone pain that I never had before the injections. I thought I had ruined my health as it was painful to bend down, walk, aching all over all the tine, I also was not believable to my provider when I shared concerns but she attributed it to anxiety, etc. I do think she had rethought this as so many more are communicating about this issue. She is very thorough so I do trust her. I am healthy and active and run, walk, ski, mountain bike, etc. I could barely put on a pair of yoga pants after 6-7 months of injections. The good news is I stuck it out for 11 months and had amazing gains in my spine, -3.8 to -2.1. Hip and other site minor increases but they weren't as bad so took me out of osteoporosis zone. That was two years ago and it took me probably 6-7 months after no injections to be rid of the pain. Now, I am due for DEXA this month and have been on Actonel. Was on Fosomax following Evenity and that increased pain in muscles and bone so switch to Actonel and I have been fine. Will hopefully have decent numbers with DEXA this month. I do recommend Great Bones by Keith McCormick.

The Evenity shots were very painful in my arms. Couldn’t sleep on either side for days.
Asked the doctor if I could get them in my “love handles”. Total game changer!
