High Cobalt Chromium levels

Posted by windy77 @windy77, Aug 21, 2025

I have a MOM THR in 2003 - Depuy Pinnacle . I'm now 70. While I knew about potentials of Metalosis, I never had any symptoms so I was never tested. Jan 2024 my hip squeaked for a week, then went away. I'm very active and no weakness or other symptoms. I went to a recommended Ortho in Chicago area - since my original surgeon retired. I was tested and Cobalt/Chromium came back 22.6/15.5 ng/mL. I also had a MRI - which showed no abnormal issues. The decision was to wait a year and test again - which I did this month- the Cobalt/Chromium came back 11/11 ng/mL. - the results went down(both were done at the same lab in NC (lab corp of america). Still no other symptoms and squeaking never came back. I haven't met with my doctor again yet - presuming we'd do a wait another year plan again. I have several questions 1) Is it logical that my Cobalt Chromium went down - without doing anything? 2) Does it matter where blood tests are done? 3) Can other things affect blood tests - I don't take any medications. And stopped my Vitamin D the week before the blood test.

Hello Sue,
Sorry, if I saved my source/s from so long ago they'd be on floppy disc; now not even a reader device to be found. But I just did a quick duck duck go search showing several discussions for metal on metal joints. Scary.
The idea that edge-loading could contribute to sending shards of metal into circulation thus increasing chances of forming ions is reasonable. Just my view of it.
I've had zero indication of trouble or systemic issues in these 11-years.
So I plan to keep on keeping on but being alert for unattributed symptoms and look to metallic ionic poisoning immediately.
Thank you for your concern and diligence on this topic.

To keep ahead of current available information available about this Subject, I would recommend everyone who has had Major Joint Replacement such as a Hip request annual Blood Test for Harmful Metals.
I personally am highly Contaminated above acceptable levels.

Your cobalt levels are toxic from what the orthopedic surgeon told my wife and he removed the implant, IV medication for 8 weeks with a medicated spacer, then new implant. Be a strong self advocate and if your current orthopedic surgeon will not preform, seek and search one that shows compassion and willingness to help you!

NAC = N-Acetyl Cysteine

My chromium levels went down a bit and when I asked my dr. how that could happen since I had done nothing different except gain the weight I had lost. I had lost 18 pds and when I became hypoglycaemic and had to eat every 2 to 3 hrs I regained it all. That was the only thing different. Still waiting to be seen by an orthopaedic surgeon to see what can and should be done. Anyone have severe nose bleeds because of high chromium and cobalt levels?

I am taking NAC 3 X day. I had my metal levels tested after 3 months, CO came down from 10.8 to 4.5 and chromium came down from 4.6 to 1.
I am also on a clean diet, and scheduled for high irrigation colonic while I search for a surgeon that is knowledgeable about metalosis and has revision experience. Not easy...

I too have elevated cobalt, 13,but low chromium . Waiting on Ortho consult again..
But issue when I had cataracts removed, then opacification happened, treated with Yag laser but still needed new Rx glasses as Dr said it was my astigmatism
After too much reading I'm afraid I'm having irreversible retinal, optic nerve damage as I'm blurry a lot
I had to postpone revision due to pandemic( no operating rooms available) then my disabled daughter needed care and colon surgery
Now I'm needing knee replacements but also this 2008 MoM implant needs to come out? Very little pain, some rotation issues but walk 2 miles
It's all so depressing and I fear my vision will get worse but.. if revision done will vision just stay same as damage done?

I have vision issues as well…ive noticed after each chelation treatment, my “floaters” are horrible! My eyes water tons…I can’t tell if I’m crying or if my eyes are just tearing…I guess a little of both. I can’t control the crying anymore, it’s so weird

You have elevated levels?
You haven't had revision of implant?
My Drs won't do chelation and I know I have to do surgery but finishing dental implant by December then decide hip or knee?
Also found out my ferritin( im 77) is 27 which is at very low end of normal but also losing lots of hair
Is it the cobalt or iron or both? Yikes!!

Not sure where you live, my wife went to Dartmouth in New Hampshire; they have four on staff that do nothing but knees and hips and revisions.
Best of luck
