Is there a supplement that really works?

Posted by debbik @debbik, Nov 14, 2024

I was diagnosed 6 years ago with osteoporosis. I thought I was doing everything possible to build bone density but my latest bone density showed it got worse by 6%. I am taking a supplement called ‘bone-up’ which is supposed to be natural and has StimuCal. I’m wondering if there are better supplements out there that really help? Has anyone seen positive bone density results? If so, I would love to know what you are taking and doing. By the way, I’m 65, and try to be fairly active. Thank you.

Has anyone tried Fosteum Plus? It’s a medical food supplement with Genistein in it. It is a prescription. I’ve been trying it.

@janeted Hi - I just found Fosteum Plus doing research today. How long have you been on it and where did you get it? I know it is a prescription but it is not covered by my insurance but I saw an online pharmacy with a very good price. Not sure if my Endo will prescribe it. Was your doctor reluctant or do they have experience with it?

The two studies showed reduced fractures; that's what we are looking for...

This is not related to Algae Cal ads.

@karenjaninaz Hi - can you provide a link to those studies here please? Yes, goal is not to fracture...

My dr here at home was not a fan of it, but while getting Evenity shots while in Florida, that practice recommended it, so I decided to let them order it for me. It came from Blink online Pharmacy I think in Philadelphia. It was about $150 for a 3 month supply. I have not taken it as regularly as I should be doing. I just so I sure of which was to proceed …

Evenity shots were once a month for a year. But Fosteum plus can be taken at same time and then continued.

Did you use just AlgaeCal Plus or did you take their Strotium?

I took both Algae Cal Plus as well as the Strontium. It did improve my numbers a little on the bone density tests which I insist on doing every year. I had to quit taking it a couple of years ago as it was giving of me diarrhea . This last year t-score reading was -1.5 for my left hip neck, (down .1 from the previous year, -1.3 for my left Hip (total) a decrease of .07 from the previous year. If I do this year, I will be in the Osteoporosis range. Than my reading for the Spine (Total) was -1.4 which was and improvement of .3..I have been taking Ultimate Bone Support by Advanced BioNutritionals for the past year. Depending on the web site, different ones are recommended as the No. 1 choice. Which one would you recommend. I also take coral calcium, Krill oil. Vitamin D3, Calm by Joseph's organic for my nerves. My heart is good. I am told that my arteries are like a babie's - clear

@joanmperez, I follow the AlgaeCal suggestions, only with the Now Foods brand. I think it is cleaner without lead. The kind of magnesium in AlgaeCal, magnesium oxide can cause diarrhea. I take magnesium glycinate instead. This way, I take each supplement separately. No diarrhea.

I stopped taking the strontium, because it is heavier than calcium, so interferes with DEXA results. I do wonder, though, if it might help bones.

AlgaeCal has lead in it?

@jenjarv10, I learned this on this website. It probably isn't a problem for an adult. When I first researched this, I learned that Now Foods gets their algae from near Norway and AlgaeCal gets theirs from near Brazil.

Which product of Now Foods are you taking to replace """""""Algae Cal? I see there is a store near me. Is it the one that is the Sea Vegetable?
