@sashamore, what are your symptoms? How have you been coping with the recurrence?

i was hospitalized for 5 days due to ischemic colitis,thankfully I didn't need surgery drs say It may never happen again they explained its like having a stroke in the bowels ,for some reason the blood flow stops and when it comes back so does the bleeding,

I was diagnosed with Ischemic Colitis back in 2010 and have had several episodes and some recently ,I cannot take that kind of pain anymore it is indescribable. I have three stents in my heart and have had mitral valve and arota valve replacement surgerys..The pain is so bad I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack and I have tremendous colon spasms that affect my back..I was told back in 2010 That I will probably need some of my colon removed.. Now it is 2018 and I'm haveing the same problems..I have appointment with new GI doctor. I'm scared of this disease because its so painful. I throw up and and become incoherent when this happens..spasming uncontrollable with pain..I dont know what to do or how to deal with this.. please help I'm so scare I will have episode any minute because it comes on without warning.

I am so sorry to hear of your issues with you colon. I had the same thing several years ago. After having several episodes of ischemic colitis, my doctor referred me to a surgeon who scheduled me fo surgery. I had several inches of my colon removed and while I hurt like H--L, for several days; I have had very few episodes in fifteen years. I encourage you to consider having the portion of your colon removed that is affected. I know the pain you are having or at least I think I do as I went through a lot of the same pain. I am new to the IC community, having been hospitalized for a week and discharged today. I really don’t know where to begin….do you find these episodes are related to stress? I had so much blood loss….like crash blood loss, more than anything I’ve seen in my life. Also had the severe cramps and diarrhea.
As I think back over the decades, I think I had several smaller episodes that I dismissed. I am fortunate to have not have any colon decay so far. I’m just stunned. Don’t know how to get better, what to eat…do I have to now carry a diaper bag in my mid 60’s? It came on so very fast
