Stem Cell Therapy for Rotator Cuff Tears or Arthritis
I understand that the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Department offers stem cell therapy for patients with rotator cuff tears. Where can I learn more about this procedure and decide if I am possibly a candidate for such a procedure? I am 74 years old and have been diagnosed with a total rotator cuff tear. Thank you.

@vignali, while you check out some of the other posts and wait for other members to respond, are you comfortable sharing what shoulder issues you are having? Pain, mobility, strength?
I have a full tear rotator cuff I don’t want surgery I had rotator cuff surgery last year on my right shoulder I just can’t gonthru that again my left shoulder has a full tear my previous surgeon said I have two options one to do the full replacement or repair it same as before with robotics I git two other options said I do not need a full replacement so I’m upset with the surgeon that I used before my right shoulder I fell and tore it off the bone my left I still have full motion just in pain in center of my arm my neurologist said fur my age to get the stem cells. I’m gain since I did it for my knees with great results.
I’m told with complete tears it’s best to get surgery I have two other irtopetic doctors want to do stem cells. My problem I don’t want to do stem cells if it doesn’t work on a full tear. I’m told I have no bone on bone in my shoulders just some arthritis. I want to do the stem cells, I’m just concern about the truth which way to go since I have Ben lie to by my previous surgeon. My question will stem cells work on my shoulder with a complete tear rather then surgery .
Don’t know how to get to where you are saying to go
Hi interest to see if you had stem cells on a complete torn rotator cuff
Are any of you watching SECOND OPINION on PBS. had a great show w patient on PAIN. Mentioned PRP and stem cells. But I had my PRP and Stem cells out of fat in hip. There is supposed to b more cells in fat, then from bones.
Mine came from both fat and bone. My doctor believes a combination of the 2 is better than just one alone. Two years later and still no pain.
i agree. Lots of doubters out there. Have to do your home work and read up on it. All i can say is no pain pills and no cane or the pain of going through tkr.
I’m 71 years old. Seen 4 drs who do stem cells. Both ways. But due to other health issues like chronic body inflammation they are afraid I’ll not be able to tolerate the stem cell treatment. That is confusing to me
Welcome to MayoClinicConnect @12061948 . You’ve asked about stem cell therapy for a rotator cuff problem. The doctors have mentioned that health issues and chronic body inflammation could cause you to not tolerate the therapy. What did the doctors say to you? If you are confused, maybe you can make a second appointment and ask for a clearer explanation. Take your spouse or a friend with you and take notes!
Spouse has a torn rotator cuff, anybody have experience with PRP and stem cell injections
