Stem Cell Therapy for Rotator Cuff Tears or Arthritis

Posted by peterauen @peterauen, Feb 15, 2017

I understand that the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Department offers stem cell therapy for patients with rotator cuff tears. Where can I learn more about this procedure and decide if I am possibly a candidate for such a procedure? I am 74 years old and have been diagnosed with a total rotator cuff tear. Thank you.

Am 70 years old and work out 4 times a week, tennis a couple times and golf regularly. Considerable pain in right shoulder from narrowing of C6 and C7 disks and calsification of bone in shoulder socket that impinges on bicep and forearm nerves. Can a stem cell treatment in these areas assist in resolving the pain

Hello @synergy, welcome to Connect. You may notice that I moved you discussion and combined it with a discussion that already exists on stem cell treatments for shoulders. I suggest clicking on VIEW & REPLY so you can read through the discussion that other members are having about stem cells for shoulders. Here is some additional information from Mayo Clinic as well:

Regenerative Medicine Consult Service Process
Transplant Call-in Center
844-276-2003

What to expect when you call the number:
– An employee will answer and ask the nature of why you are calling
– Say you are interested to stem cells for osteoarthritis or whichever joint ails you
– The employee will funnel your call to the appropriate coordinators from there
– For joint issues, you will be transferred to PMR (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation)
– Appointment coordinators will ask more specific questions (inclusion and exclusion criteria)

If you meet the criteria:
– You will be asked to send in your records and a doctor will look at it in a case-by-case basis

Important Notes to be Aware of:
– PMR is a busy practice, so wait times may exist but answers will be given
– If a treatment exists in the clinic for a diagnosis (i.e. Leukemia) stem cells are not offered
– Price is out of pocket
– Types of stem cell treatments offered are Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) injections and Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections. You can find more specific information on these types of injections here, http://mayocl.in/2AUIoAn.

Hello @pat3316, I moved your discussion and combined it with an existing discussion on stem cell therapy for rotator cuffs and shoulder arthritis. I did this because there have been some members discussing your exact question. If you are replying by email, I suggest you click on VIEW & REPLY so that you can read through what other members have posted about stem cell therapy for rotator cuffs. There is also some information on Mayo Clinic's consult line.

@pat3316, if you are comfortable sharing, are you researching stem cell therapy specifically for a rotator cuff injury and shoulder pain?

Yes, I am scheduled next week for an injection. Also interested in how effective they are for other joints as well. Thank for moving my question.

I've had the same diagnosis. One Orthopedist said I need shoulder replacement. I got a second opinion and the Orthopedist said I didn't need shoulder replacement. I do have intermittent shoulder pain which is a nuisance. I'm getting a cortisone shot tomorrow. Doctor said I could have it done four times a year. My internist says that some data suggest platelet rich injections can help with shoulder osteoarthritis. I may have that done first since it is much less expensive than stem cell injections.

Hello @peterauen, welcome to Connect. Thank you for posing the question regarding stem cell treatments and shoulders. We have active discussions taking place on Connect regarding stem cells treatments for knees and hips, but this brings up a great point.

Mayo Clinic hosted an hour long webinar all about stem cells. A Mayo Clinic member posted a question about that shoulders:

"Will this work for shoulders?"

Answer: "Yes, we currently perform treatments on the shoulder. If you would like to seek consultation at Mayo Clinic, call 612-313-0520 for our Minneapolis location or 507-266-9100 for our Rochester location. You can also visit our Regenerative Medicine Consult Service page for more information: http://mayocl.in/1Ag7duN."

@peterauen, is this the information you were looking for? Have you seen a physician regarding your rotator cuff and what information did they give you?

What is your success rate for rotator cuff treatment. I just found out I have a tear and just had an MRI. I hate the idea of surgery and being away from my activities for as long as it take to recover. Please contact me at my email address I used to register. Darsr
