Heat affects stamina?
I have been diagnosed with PMR. Heat and humidity really affects my stamina. On a cool day I can walk slowly for 40 minutes or so. On a hot/humid day about 3 minutes. When I see footage of marathon runners almost collapsing and their legs go all rubbery that's exactly how I feel. Anyone else experiencing this? At the moment I'm on 11 mg Prednisone and trying to taper off 1/2 mg every two weeks.

Old post…..heat humidity…..off set with Tylenol for Arthritis…..ok’d by my Rheumatologist with prednisone. 2 with bfast works for me
Oddly enough pain is not increased with the heat/humidity, just stamina.
Your heart has to work harder when it's hot and humid, to try and keep your body cool. Do you have access to a fitness center? It might be easier to do something indoors where it's air conditioned.

2 ReactionsI practice Tai Chi so that takes care of the air conditioned exercise but.. I have two hairy 'poopies' and getting their walks in have been a challenge. I really have to gage how far I go and keep my eyes open for benches and/or stairs to sit on. Has let to some interesting chats....

1 ReactionHeat and humidity have always affected me, but more so since being diagnosed with PMR. I am newly diagnosed, and just started Kevzara since I cannot take Prednisone. It's early days for me, it will take awhile for the Kevzara to kick in.

1 ReactionI never had trouble with heat until the hot days this summer (first summer with prednisone). I normally walk a few miles for exercise but have had several days when I would get totally wiped when I walked in the heat. The worst, first, time I literally felt ill, weak as water, light-headed, and it took a couple of days to recover. I've been more careful since.
After two months of severe symptoms I have now been Diagnosed with PMR. The Prednisone feels like a miracle drug right now . I am on 15mg.
My friends and I have been planning a trip to Vietnam and Thailand that I am supposed to leave for it at the the end of this month. I feel well enough to go but am concerned about (heat and humidity) (if things go sideways can I up my prednisone without a Dr.'s permission?) I am getting mixed messages about the viability of travelling right now from My M.D. , travel clinic and google searches. What have people found when travelling?
Hello @terryartist, Welcome to Connect. It's good to hear that your PMR is under control since you have been diagnosed only two months ago. @dadcue and others have shared experience on traveling when you have PMR in another discussion here if you want to scan through it until other members with experience respond:

@terryartist Last spring I traveled to the Netherlands after being diagnosed with PMR in Feb. I was taking 15 or 20 mg of prednisone. My pain was under control but it affected my stamina and shortness of breath. There was more walking than I had been doing so I had to take more frequent breaks than ever before. Heat wasn't an issue. I had gained weight and had been less active. I don't know if it was the PMR, the prednisone, the weight, or just being out of shape. I just had to adjust. My prednisone has tapered to 1 and I have more stamina but some pain. I am getting ready to take a trip next month and my doctor has given me permission to increase prednisone if pain becomes a problem but only increase conservatively.

2 ReactionsMy take on this is PMR has the ability to decrease our normal exercise intensity because our bodies are fighting the inflammation as well as trying to maintain its own normal bodily functions. It takes a toll on our bodies and we cannot expect to maintain our previous level of activity prior to the disease. I’ve experienced the same and it is disheartening to feel these symptoms. Hopefully we will all get past this disease and return to a more normal way of life in the near future.
