Chronic dry eye syndrome: What helps dry, itchy, swollen eyes?

Posted by shmerdloff @shmerdloff, Jul 3 12:39pm

Hi. Anyone have a solution (no pun intended) for chronic dry eye syndrome? Not Sjorgens. Hot? Cold? Oil? Drops? Duct blockage? Seems everyone uses everything with only moderate success. Saw ophthalmologist. Said use refresh🤷‍♀️

Well all sounds great but I have extremely dry eye and the cost out of pocket for those fancy eye drops and the IPL treatments is only for the rich. I do a cold or warm compress on my eye and the Systane PF ultra hydration as needed and Systane gel at night. I also take fish oil, and a cheaper version of Areds eye vitamins and also do sea buckthorn oil caps. Seems everything that works is not covered by insurance and since I’m on Medicare and I also have the premium prescription plan because I already have two tier three drugs I’m stretched financially. My tier three have 7 more years to be generic. So All said, yes go for it if you can afford it but the cost is high in the US.

Castor oil compresses a few times a day seems to be working. Thanks.

@shmerdloff Pls elaborate: castor oil (drops?) directily instilled into each eye? If so, a particular brand?

@delia74 not drops in eyes. Warm water / castor oil compresses on top of the eyes. Probably any pure cold pressed organic brand. Hexane free. Dojo ,Irvine California.

@shmerdloff Thx for clarifying. I've been using warm-up moistened small towels placed over eyes. Helpful, although does not moisten the eyes, it does relax and give relief. Due to so many sensitivities, I rely on Systane ultra preservative free lubricant drops, keeping eyes closed just a bit of time after instilling. Had plugs put in ages ago to help keep fluid from escaping, but within about a year each one popped out. My situation is aggravated by the effects of MS on my entire system as well as optic neuritis issues, so I struggle to stay on top of the situation. There are surgical procedures that address dry eye syndrome but not considering at this time.
