Last PSA Number Before Cancer Diagnosis?

Posted by mikeg73 @mikeg73, Aug 23 10:27am

Would anyone mind sharing their last PSA number before they were diagnosed with prostate cancer?

It seems like PSA of 4.0 is the typical point where many are referred to Urologist. I'm wondering are most people getting diagnosed within the 4 - 10 PSA range.

Did your PSA go down after treatment?

I would believe is all you had was a PSA of 4.0, Dr will wait and do another PSA test. If that test is 4.0 or greater, Dr may send you to a urologist. Get the mri before the biopsy.

I was 7.4 when I was sent to the urologist but my PSA the day before I started treatment was 5.2.

My husband was diagnosed in February, he's 55 and hadn't been to the doctor since before Covid so this was the first PSA test he ever got and it was 285!

Mine was 682 and I had no symptoms until about 2 months prior. My primary care said that PSA screening was not recommended anymore and I had no reason not to believe her back then, although now I know much better. That was in February 2023. My oncologist started me on Firmagon shots immediately, later changing to Orgovyx tablets, and also adding Xtandi. Next week I start radiation and Provenge.

I spoke with someone recently who got the Provenge 12 years ago during trial and takes xtandi for some time. He’s 70 now, his psa was 1900 and undetectable today.

My PSA was 2.0, had doubled over preceding 12 months, also blood in semen. MRI was clear, DRE nothing, ultrasound nothing. Urologist and family doctor here in San Diego said nothing to see here, go home, you are fine. I waved the BS flag over the hematuria and offered to pay for a Biopsy. Got the biopsy and based on the 12 cores it was Gleason3+4, large tumor at 20% of the left side. The Urologist said it was one of the larger MRI negative tumors Gleason 7 he had ever seen. Had I done what the medical community suggested and ignored it, my Urologist said I might be dealing with a 4+3 or worse when my PSA hit 4. When in doubt, be your own advocate!

Interesting comments on PSA not picking up a cancer possible. Failed to mention I am 90 years old and still in good shape.Had 90 day review with oncologist and PSA number undetectable. She thought that was a good reading but asked about any blood in discharges or pain anywhere. So far “No”. I think at some time a PSMA would be informative. JackB
