ALA Supplement recommendation

Posted by cecelia19 @cecelia19, Sep 26, 2024

Can anyone recommend a specific brand of ALA that works well for them and if R-ALA is more effective? If it is, what brand of R-ALA is a quality one? Also, the dosage that they take. I’ve been taking 400 mg of Best Naturals ALA which used to help when my neuropathy was localized. I’m wondering if switching to an R-ALA product would be better. I’d really appreciate any advice you can give me as I am struggling right now.

I have a similar situation. I'm 77 now. Since COVID, I was unable to walk, sit and stand for any length of time. It was frustrating because I used to hike miles. I tried everything non surgical, epidural, nerve block, acupuncture, chiropractor, and spent thousands on physical therapy. Finally I had surgery, fusion L3and L4 , the surgeon put a spacer in, whatever it means. He came highly recommended. Supposed to be very conservative. It's been a few months now, I'm still having the same problems. Everyone around me said I am doing great so I guess I'm just impatient??? My PCP ordered an ultrasound for my legs for claudication. I'm on gaberpantin 300mg 3 times a day. I cannot tolerate any opiods, my surgeon recommended alpha lipoic acid, B12 and magnesium. He did say I can try epidural. He also said if I had neuropathy before, surgery can sometimes makes it worse. I would like to hear from anyone with the same issue. Any advice would be much appreciated. I'd like to think I have some good years left to spend with my grandchild, and visit my daughter who has retired to another state. I went on a plane in June for a wedding in Canada, three hours sitting was very difficult.

You say your doctor referred you for an ultrasound for claudication. Did that turn up anything. I have never thought to ask about having the veins in my legs checked. Do you wear support socks. I have started wearing knee-high support socks (without toes) at the lower pressure of 15 ro 20 and they seem to help my calves.

I looked through my me medical records and found that I had something done to see if there's any plaque in my legs. It was done at my cardiologist's office, his comment was that it was no more than people my age. That was 3 years ago . I have not done the ultra sound my PCP ordered. Wondered if it's the same thing. It's next Tuesday. If it's the same thing then we can compare both tests. No, I have no worn any support socks. I cannot wear socks ..I find them very uncomfortable. However, my back surgeon gave me these wireless compression things that I use sometimes. I just charge them when they are out of juice and I put them around my calves. Like a soft massage. Since they are wireless, I can walk with them. I don't know when I'll get the results of my ultra sound. If you can text me in a week, hopefully I have something to report. You could probably talk to your doctor and order a test too . Won't hurt!

I want to use R-ALA tor my peripheral neuropathy of legs and feet. Unfortunate I am on lots of medication and I’m concerned about interactions, particularly as I am on a blood thinner. I know that it always advises to involve your GP but mine is not terribly helpful. I wonder if anyone has experienced the same dilemma. That aside would you still recommend the same brand of R-ALA and the same dose. Any advice is gratefully welcome
John

Hello John,
So sorry about your dilemma; however, as with everything that passes our mouth, it’s imperative to never measure what we need compared to anybody else. Asking other people especially about a certain medication or supplement dosage is strongly not recommended. None of us with our own condition and history knows the case history of another person. Different bodies react differently with everything that goes through the mouth. It’s also imperative to keep in mind the potential side effects that may occur. Believe me, I am saying this from my own experience and reading other people who are always asking other people for suggestions or recommendations.
If your doctor is not helpful, then you might want to start thinking about searching for another one.
I wish you the best.
Take care and have a serene Sunday,
gus

Just discovered your post. I, too, have neuropathy in my legs, began with a couple of toes on right foot. It kept me awake and restless for months. I felt GP and neurologist ignored this. I rarely had a good night's sleep. I mentioned this burning sensation in my legs to my dermatologist and she mentioned Nervive with ALA - 7 Day treatment.
I tried it and it has made a great difference and I am sleeping 6-7 hours straight. Such a relief. Now to find reliable sources as Nervive is expensive. I am trying to reduce dosage from 1800mg to 1200 mg a day.

Glad to hear and it’s encouraging for others to hear ALA helped. What are you reducing dosage of?

Reducing dosage of Nervive (ALA) from 1800mg to 1200mg. So far it is working and I have no leg pain at night. 600mg in am and 600mg in pm (Nervive PM)

Thanks! May I know how bad was the leg pain before you started, and how long did it take before you started seeing improvement?

I see that Nervive is not just ALA. But it has vitamin B complex. My blood work shows that my B12 is high. Wondering whether I should go for just ALA. Anyone in this forum have a similar predicament ?

My leg pain kept me awake at night; burning sensation in one leg, restless legs. No good sleep for months. Great sleep now with ALA. It is suggested that I try Na R ALA as a purer form. Any suggestions on provider os this form of ALA?

Glad to hear so much improvement in sleep due to ALA . The neurologist I saw in John Hopkins recently told me to try taking ALA . Then I searched in this forum and found your posting. I am not aware of Na R ALA as a purer form. Is that different from ALA available ordinarily like in Amazon ?

We are all here because we haven’t found much relief from what our doctors have prescribed to us. So it does help to ask others about these supplements. The supplements and their dosage that someone has found useful can be starting points for us and from there we can tweak them as per our reaction to it. There’s an old saying in another language which says - an experienced patient is better than a new doctor! I think it’s really true.

The Na R ALA seems to be available on Amazon and I just ordered a bottle to try. You may want to try Nervive (7 day) supply to see if it helps. That is where I found relief and now I am experimenting with different sources and dosages. My GP is in support of this.
