Can you share some Nissen fundoplication success stories?
I’ve read a number of posts from people who are unhappy with the results of their Nissen fundoplication surgeries. I am considering having the surgery and would like to hear from people who are happy with their surgical outcomes. A recent New England Journal of Medicine article reported that two thirds of people are very satisfied with their Nissen outcomes. Do any of these people participate in these posts?

@movietvshow - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. So sorry to hear you regret your Nissen and feel it was the worst decision you ever made. Nothing solid to eat for 3-5 months is a long time.
Do you know what is triggering the coughing as you lie down?

1 ReactionI had Nissen fundoplication and Heller myotomy in 2017, I would not have the surgery again because it did not really solve my problem which is dysphagia and esophageal spasms. anything with carbonation gurgles right back up and the worst side effect for me is weird, I used to sing in the choir and now when I try to sing I feel like choking and start gurgling, not to mention the fact that you cannot vomit. I am terrified of catching a stomach bug because of that. Nobody wants to vomit, but occasionally you have to.

3 ReactionsNo I don’t know I’m kinda getting over the flu right now maybe that’s making it worse. But even before the flu I had issues with that.

1 ReactionHello,
Im seeing this in 2025. Wondering how you managed.??
My friend had a fundoplication during hernia surgery. He failed the 3rd pre surgery test so was told it most likely wouldn't be done but it was. He wasnt happy. Suffers the symptoms mentioned by others.
Has reversal helped anyone / would you recommend. ??They are saying his looks too tight. He doesn't understand fully why it was done, his prior Gerd issue was long resolved.
Im an ex SCS patient and a horror story, sadly Drs DO think their word is gospel...I now have a healthy mistrust for many of their protocols....sad situation with medical profession. Hope everyone is doing better!

2 ReactionsI had the 360 degree operation 20 years ago by laparoscopic surgery. Advised recovery 2-4 weeks . I started with uncontrollable diarrhoea and had this constant for about 11 weeks. I eventually got back to work but life was different having to pack essential change of clothes for if I got caught short during a journey or out in public. Years after I was under Gastroenterology who performed a series of tests and they diagnosed I was suffering from Sibo and BAM , I was put on Colystyramine and this has resolved some of the issues . Recently I have suffered a relapse in the reflux issue but the consultants are trying a mixture of Omeprazole, Famotitine and Gaviscon to sort out the problem due to me having other health issues that need surgery . At the stage of the original surgery I was out of options however I wasn’t aware to what extent my life would be altered. There was talk of the Vegas nerve being caught but this was never confirmed. Looking at figures I feel I may have been one of the unlucky ones . My surgery was not at the Mayo.
