I would love to hear commentary from people who have a hiatal hernia and what you do for it or have done for it. I was given a cardiac scan of my heart area for something and the scan 'accidentally' picked up that I have a hiatal hernia (totally unrelated to cardiac issues). I want to know what has worked for others. Yes, I have a doctor but feedback from actual patients is beneficial as well. I am not looking for medical advice for my own situation, just wondering about what has worked or not worked for you. Thanks.

I have had a small hiatal hernia for years and none of my doctors ever wanted to do anything about it. It doesn't bother me, so I’m fine with that.

I’ve had a hiatal hernia for many years and I didn’t know until I had a ct scan for my chest. I noticed the that when I bent forward causing some pressure in the hernia area, it feels like it shifted and this caused discomfort but it would go away when I stand up straight and massage the area it would move back to normal. I asked the doctor about it and he said it’s a small hiatal hernia but he didn’t offer any help with it, I don’t want surgery and I’m just reading that it often comes back.

Same here! Before I even knew that I have Gerd, I would sometimes bend down to tie my shoes. Something hard was felt close to my upper stomach and there was pain like my Diaphragm was in spasms. I did the same thing, massaged the area and it would resolve. Don't feel it often now since I try not to bend down that way.

I have had the surgery twice. It has come back a 3rd time. They won't do surgery a 3rd time and they can't help me. I can't swallow most of the time. When i can get small amounts of liquid/food down it often gets lodged and backs up. The strange thing is it happens mostly when I try to drink. My throat just locks up. I have to remind myself I can still breathe. I have to do this bent over gaging thing, because I can't throw up normally. Most of the time it happens after the first sip. More liquid comes out than went in. Needless to say, I have lost 40lbs in the last 2 months and am unable to stay hydrated. My urine is brown or dark orange. Every once in awhile, I get dark yellow. I throw up at least 5 times a day. I can't work. I am weak, short of breath, and have to have a water bottle in my hand at most all times. Often, I believe I might have had a successful few sips. After a minute or two, foam starts coming up my throat. I'll start gagging and regurgitating. I am withering away. I used up all my sick leave, vacation, and sick pool. I have been on FMLA for the most of the last two years. I've lost my job and now my insurance. I'm screwed.............

I really feel for you. Go to this website
http://www.iqoro.com and see if they can help. My swallowing is better using their device but I'm not sure they can deliver to the US. Anyhow, they will listen and give advise.

I had surgery for my hiatal hernia that failed after just two months. I have awful acid reflux at night and am seeing the surgeon for a second surgery. Has anyone else had a failed hiatal hernia operation

Hi, @msturcken - I moved your post to this discussion on hiatal hernia where you've chatted before so that you can keep talking with members such as @wabbit9 @stoclady @donnatownsend and others about your experience with a failed hiatal hernia surgery:

- Hiatal hernia https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/hiatal-hernia-1/

Sorry to hear you went through a whole surgery and recovery and it failed after two months.

When will you be seeing the surgeon? Are you returning to the same surgeon or seeing another one this time?

I am returning to the same Dr. I see her this week. I wonder if it failed because I strain from chronic constipation. I have doubled my water intake which is helping. I need MiraLAX everyday
