Anyone wake feeling exhausted after seemingly dreaming all night

Posted by mazeppabob @mazeppabob, Jul 26, 2022

I never wake refreshed/rested. It has been like this for as long as I can remember and I am 77 now,
My sleep medicine DR called it EPIC dreaming. A rare disorder with no known cause or treatment. His only suggestion was to prescribe Modafinil (a stimulant) taken in the morning to perk me up.
I have tried CPAP and other meds to no avail.
I wonder if this is really that rare.

I know I’m late to this post, but if you still haven’t had any success with doctors, I’d go and see a naturopath. I’ve had issues in the past that doctors have no clue about then have gone to a naturopath and they’ve known the solution right away. They have a wealth of knowledge and super helpful when traditional western medicine hasn’t helped

it could be uars, it is missed many times in sleep studies, you should ask to get a sleep study done which specifically scores for rdi, or do a watchpat study which scores rdi. good luck

Ask your doctor (I had to ask my psychiatrist) about trazodone. A small dosage puts me in a deeper sleep and while I remember dreams when I wake up I don't feel as though I lived them so much.

Good luck to anyone still struggling with this.

YES! @mazeppabob I have experienced this exact thing my entire life as well. I am 37 now and this has been lifelong for me. I have never met anyone else with this experience. It does seem to be quite rare especially because no doctor I've ever talked to has even really believed me and thinks I am exaggerrating or just plain wrong about my own experience. I would also guess there is a level of it being hereditary because my father struggled with the same thing. He tried sleep doctors and they couldn't figure anything out and brushed him off. It's pretty exhausting for sure. I also don't believe it is induced by stress or anxiety because, like you said, it's lifelong every night which seems odd to say we have been stressed every day since birth. Same with it being a side effect of medication. I don't take any medications. I have actually tried sleep medications but nothing makes it stop. I don't have much valuable insight to answer your questions otherwise but really wanted to connect because you are NOT alone with this. I'd love some answers as well but this does seem rare and underresearched.

This is me too! I was diagnosed with OSA and fragmented/interrupted sleep. I was overweight and recently lost 45 lbs to which I am no longer having active apnea but Dr wants me to try CPAP again. I have to most vivid dreams and can remember them in detail upon awakening. The most vivid ones are right before I wake up the last hour or 2 of my sleep cycle. I've spoken to people about this and it's rare that I meet another person who has this happen to them too.

I did a sleep study and they said I have idiopathic hypersomnia. My brain doesn’t sleep when I am sleeping. I don’t dream but I’m always tired.

I have the same issue. It has been several years and I have not found any medication that helps. I am so tired of being tired, the brain fog, the sleep drunkenness. HELP

I would look at a naturopath before looking at any prescription medicine. Many of the sleep prescriptions bring you int a world of side effects and dependence. Also someone that practices CBTI, is worth trying first.

My husband has the same issue dreaming the whole night whenever he’s sleeping and remembers every dream so vividly and he’s constantly tired after whole nit of sleep because he was active all night in his dream. He is 54 years old, and this has been going on all his life too. We are constantly searching for ways to help him. I read articles on possible brain lesions may cause this to unresolved trauma or emotional stress . Would love to connect to explore this further.

lindakang9, Check his meds. and look up the side effects. Even over the counter meds can cause dreaming issues. I have been taking Children's Zyrtec (antihistame) and I dream unpleasant dreams on it, so I am going to stop taking it. This is listed as a side effect of Zyrtec.

Prayers & Blessings....

I have had the epic dreaming issue for almost 20 years. They are very detailed and if I wake up during the night and go back to sleep I have another dream and this goes on every night. Very seldom a bad dream but once in awhile my husband has had to wake me up because I was screaming. I just had a brain MRI with and without contrast for something else and for an 84 year old woman my brain is pretty healthy.
