Decreased appetite after stroke
My 83 year old mom who was in good health before her stroke 6 weeks ago... Mom always had a great Appetite and a healthy diet. She has recently passed the swallowing test but refuses to eat, she pushes her food away. Anyone have any ideas on how we can try to help or want to eat?
We have tried the change of scenery different ideas... she did have a lot of problems with her tummy and the liquid meds that they had to give her through the stomach tube could that be discouraging her thinking that eating has consequences of a bad tummyache ?
Thank you
Julia

I don't feel like eating much ever since my stroke almost 3 months ago.
Anybody else? Is this unusual, will my sense of taste ever get back to normal, and what can be done?

1 ReactionI didn't want to eat much after my stroke (Christmas Eve, 2018).
When I did start eating again, my tastes had changed a lot.
Over the years, I'm pretty much back to "normal" -- at least in that regard.

Also glad you've connected with @scottrl.
When you do eat since your stroke, @grrranny, are there foods you find go down more easily?

2 ReactionsThanks so much, Lisa! I've been having sort of soft, easy-to-swallow and digest foods like meatloaf, soup, cottage cheese, yogurt, bacon, eggs, avocado -- but in small, more frequent portions, because I also have to deal with type 2 Diabetes. I sometimes order cheeseburgers, chicken tenders or grilled cheese from the "kids meals" menu. Broccoli, if it's cooked well, and tiny squares of Dominoes pizza with ranch dressing. I like squeeze peanut butter and squeeze applesauce, too.
Any and all suggestions appreciated!

2 ReactionsAfter my TBI when still hospitalized in a swing bed I lost nearly ten pounds on my very small frame. I had to use a mirror to see my mouth because my neck was in a brace. When a plate of food was in front of me I actually hung my head when trying to eat. Without a sense of smell or taste it was like eating a strange substance and was no fun. I tried to drink down bottles of chocolate Ensure . I could eat tapioca pudding and ice cream. Gradually though some taste and smell returned and I ate a lot of cottage cheese with fruit and peanut butter and soups like clam chowder or wild rice and chicken.
