I found this information about Semaglutide: The Drug of Today and a Steppingstone to Tomorrow. It is also used for treatment of obesity and type II diabetes The FDA did not approve it.

For me it is the snacks. I am an emotional snacker and when upset, stressed, or worried I tend to snack as a treat to feel better. Problem is one of my most liked snacks are mixed nuts. Now they are suppose to be good for you but are high calorie. 1/4 of a cub is 180 caloried. A 1/4 cup of nuts does not even fill up your hand.

My meals are pretty much normal size, and I am not a big sugar person. I also exercise about 12 hours a week. So not a lazy person or couch potato (I almost put the "E" on end like Quale).

Over the last 5 years I have become a care giver for my wife. She developed type one diabetes about 5 years ago caused by damage to her vagus nerve during stomach surgery (3 of them). Then she had back fusion surgery, sinus surgery. So was really getting depressed and of course snacking.

Then just as things were getting better in 2023 diangosed with prostate cancer. Got that successfully treated and then in 2024 got COVID for first time that went into severe sinus infection, then bronchial infection. Kept me down for 3 months.

Then just as feeling better my wife's diabetes caused damage to a nerve in her left eye and she developed double vision. Has to have surgery but we can't get her A1C under control to have it. We got prescription for prism glasses (supposed to correct double vision) but did not work. So she has been wearing a patch over one eye now for about 6 months.

So even if I wanted to have surgery (and I don't) just would be impossible to fit in being a care giver. Sorry for the long post sometimes feels good to speak out.

I don't want anyone reading my post to hesitate to do what is best for you because I had a severe reaction to the 2.4 level dose of WEGOVY. I know a lot of people that did have same reaction and went back to the 1.75 dose level and they are doing fine losing lots of weight.

Great medication for those wanting to lose weight. I think the new pill form will even be better.

Wow. Sounds like both you and your wife have a lot to deal with as you try to fit a life around it all, and I totally get the snack urge. These are great -- I discovered a while back that I have hypoglycemia at night (due to the GLP-1 RAs, actually), and they nudge me over the line if I take them just before bed: https://topseedz.com/.

I take your point about the surgery and caregiving. When my husband had his stroke, and several years later had a difficult heart surgery experience, I would not have been open to such a commitment, either. It sounds like you've got the discipline to realign your diet, but only if you can find some sort of alternative self-indulgence, because we all need something that falls into that category. It's why I restrict my Forged in Fire and British Baking Show watching to when I use the exercise bike, which I otherwise find intolerably boring.

Just dug into JAMA, and was surprised to find essentially nothing on GLP-1 RA non-responders. One would think there would be motivation to study this group, but apparently when you can't meet demand for your products, you really aren't spending money to figure out how to jack the numbers up.

If you want to track upcoming options in the GLP-1 RA realm, check this out: https://www.primetherapeutics.com/w/prime-therapeutics-launches-new-publication-glp-1-pipeline-update. Clearly, for many people the oral drugs will be a game-changer.

@jc76 , snacking is an issue for me too. I’ve still done pretty well with my weight loss. (Type 1 diabetes.) Most of it done last year. I’m at a plateau a few pounds from my goal. I was putting nuts on my salads, but recently stopped buying them. I switched to sunflower seeds. I’m not as tempted to over eat them.

For me, it’s best if I don’t buy snack foods at all. And to limit my snack that I do have to 1 piece of fresh fruit or nonfat yogurt. I find that if I don’t have it in the house, I won’t eat it.

@celia16
Do the sunflower seeds curb your urge for nuts?

I agree with you on the snack foods and not buy them. Problem is I am married to a sugar and chocaholic. She also likes nuts and peanuts.

I hate to admit this but she does try to hide them. But knowing they are there somewhere I will find them. I did find a corn chip that has 105 calories for 21 chips and a pop corn called skinny pop that has 39 calories for each cup.

I like the sound of eating a fresh fruit and think I will try that.
Thanks

Oh man….your spouse not being able to join you with healthy diet….man. That’s unfortunate. I think you posted she has type 2 diabetes. Maybe that can inspire her to join you in better nutrition. I’m no judge though. It’s everyone’s personal choice. I have a lot of extended family members who are extremely obese with health issues. It’s heartbreaking. They are totally NOT interested in healthful foods or lifestyle. Sigh.

I find the nuts a good accent to my salads. Just a little extra interest and taste. I use just a little. My salad satisfies me. I also add protein and a good well balanced diet.

I find that I rarely ate from hunger. It was boredom or habit. If stressed, I ate little. Happy, I celebrated with treats. Not large meals.

Good luck with everything. I hope you find a solution.

My PCP stated Mayo required me to start at lowest dose and it was one shot per week. I lost no weight entire month. To be honest gained a lb. What I felt was a slight decrease in appetite for dinner. No suppression for breakfast or lunch. No reduction for snacks. I did start to have a change to bowel movents from once a day to every couple of days.

I went all the way from lowest to highest with no reduction in weight. My PCP stated I was one of those that did not react to the drug. Then after a delay starting the highest dose (wife was sick) took the 2.4 dose after 3 months of lower doses.

About 2 hours (was around 10 p.m.) felt stomach upset. Went to bed woke up in morning with nausea and vomited. Called Mayo PCP and got an afternoon appt. Vomited prior to leaving for appt. Told could not go on nausea pill due to other medication on. Given guidance on eating and having to wait for medication to leave body (which was weeks). Giving warning to drink electrolytes.

Got home around 5 p.m. and vomited. I guess unlucky one who had no reaction to drug all the way from .25 to the start of 2.4 and then the reaction to 2.4. Took about a month for me to return to normal.

My PCP asked if I would be interested in ZEPBOUND. He said had to appetite suppresors instead on one that WEGVOY had. I said no. Now months later struggling with weight. I am a very active person and was told if could keep my fitness level up could take my time losing weight.

I am in several groups where folks that haven’t been able to tolerate semaglutide have switched and had good results. Nausea and vomiting don’t seem to be a problem with tirzepatide. I have had no nausea or vomiting..Good luck.

I allow myself 1 ounce of nuts daily. I figure it into my calories because of the good fat and other benefits. I also have Triscuit Crisps..they are thinner. 130 calories per ounce. I bag a whole box up in one ounce packages. Have you ever tried roasted Edamame? I like the ranch and they have other flavors. They are prepackaged in less than an ounce but it’s enough. 110 calories, 11 grams of protein and fiber to help with the GLP constipation. Good luck!
