What causes persistent swelling in the left supraclavicular?
I have had off and on swelling of my left supraclavicular for years. In the past few months it is swollen pretty much all the time. I am awaiting results for an ultrasound but I’m very scared because everything I read about this is bad news and I have already lost a 38-year old sister to breast cancer and a 52-year old brother to colon cancer. Any words of wisdom?

Thank you @tully for taking the time to leave such a kind reply. I am older and really struggle with health anxiety. Googling this symptom has me absolutely terrified. 🙁 Wishing wonderful results for your scan and I look forward to your post. Thank you again!
Hi, I saw this on the supraclavicular and finally looked it up. I have had a sharp pain maybe 6 months maybe longer ( time moving too fast ) however it has increased. It starts in the right dip area ( where a bra strap would sit) and works down shoulder to the bicep and sometimes to wrist but mainly just shoulder and bicep. If I move arm wrong or shoulder wrong a real sharp pain makes me cringe. I thought maybe I strained the muscle but has persisted for a while. I was I bet diagnosed 20 years ago with ITP then MDS July 2022 and now myelofibrosis. I see dr again in September. I don’t seem to have the symptoms for this diagnosis. But I digress. What was your shoulder pain and how do they diagnosis. I think y’all said CT or MRI.
Thanks
Hollie
Hi Hollie,
I have never had any shoulder pain or discomfort due to the swelling in my left supraclavicular. CT scans were administered in an effort to determine what the cause is. Still waiting on results.
Thank you. I mentioned it to the new Oncologist. I will mention to my pcp also. Have an appointment next month. Anxious to hear your findings
Hollie

1 ReactionHello…new here. Came across this discussion group after searching “left supraclavicular swelling”. I too have this swelling without being able to get any answers as to why. An initial ultrasound of the area done the beginning of December showed “no dominant cystic or solid mass is visualized; a 5 mm x 2 mm oval hypoechoic subcutaneous lesion may reflect a small lymph node.” A repeat ultrasound was done 4 weeks later and I was told that it was relatively unchanged and that the lymph nodes are not enlarged. A follow-up CT scan with contrast demonstrated normal sized lymph nodes (no enlarged nodes seen). The swelling is still there and doing further research I’m still worried and feeling like there has to be an answer for this abnormal swelling. Has anyone had any further updates? @tully any update on your CT? Thanks in advance for any additional help.
@wylls
Could it be a:
"Supraclavicular Nerve Block"? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK519056/
or a
"Clavicle and subclavian artery"? https://emedicine.medscape.com/article/2000865-technique
Hope it helps somehow in your search.
@joeystia Did you ever have a CT scan to see about the swelling? Results? Any further testing done? Has the swelling resolved? Thanks for your time…new to this group after having found it through googling the swelling I have in that area first noticed the beginning of Dec 2025. Thank you for your time.
@swalex Thank you. Looked at that as a possible reason. Doesn’t look to be. I appreciate your suggestion though.
