My husband was prescribed Pepcid 40mg for acid reflux exacerbations. Because of his age (82) it is a high risk to perform any invasive procedure due to his heart failure and cardiac Amyloidosis. He has been taking Nexium for quite a while and it also has been working well. After starting Pepcid before bedtime he started to get urinary issues. At his fourth day of taking Pepcid he developed urinary retention which he suffered from it years ago. He was self-cathing for a while but the retention stopped. He went to the ER yesterday because of retaining urine (he takes diuretics). Everything was fine, the labs normal but now he is self cathing again. He decided to stop Pepcid after he found out it causes urinary retention especially in the elderly. He wants to see if Pepcid was the cause or not. Has anyone heard or has experienced issues with Pepcid regarding urinary retention?

@naiviv I have not heard of this before, but it is good to know!

I have been taking 40mg pepcid daily for 15 years. Never had urimary retention.
Is your husband's prostate enlarged? Could be other factors.
Maybe just some gaviscon at bedtime instead of pepcid. If he should stay with Nexium if that works for him.
Hope he feels better

My husband had his prostate radiated on 2009. Today he voided without catheter but I am keeping an eye on it. In his case I think it was Pepcid because that was the new medication added to his regular medication regimen. Every person is different and acts differently to new meds. Maybe is not Pepcid but everything else has come up normal. He will keep his Nexium. Thanks for responding to my message. Stay well.
