Kneeling After TKA

Posted by karenheller @karenheller, Jul 21 10:21am

Has anyone been able to kneel after TKA? I’m only nine months post-op so I haven’t tried to yet. If I knew I’d be able to kneel someday, I’d consider doing my other knee. If not, I won’t because I don’t think I could get up after falling if I couldn’t kneel on at least one knee.

I had tkr 8 months ago. After 10 weeks I was able to kneel with a towel or cushion on my knee. Go slowly, keep on trying. I am getting better at doing yoga kneeling poses. Best wishes.

According to my surgeon you should be able to kneel after TKA. I have very briefly knelt but usually only one knee at a time. It hasn't been nearly as hard or painful to knee now than it was before surgery. I had a left TKA in 12/25. Franky, I think my surgeon is more overly confident in this knee the I am. 🙂

Do not trust your surgeon.
His interest is primarily in numbers and validating a very very problematic surgery.
Too many people out here with failed inplants which our saintly docs cannot fathom why……

Avoid getting other knee done if still active.
If light light exercise/work is all you strive for- another op. MIGHT. Be ok.
But you never know.
Value your original parts…

Yup- you don't get to hear this part as you sign up for the surgery do you?
I like my active (but now limited) life.

My PT told me today that I will be able to kneel with gradual sensitization and that he’ll start working on that with me.

I agree wholeheartedly that the recovery process would have been so much easier if I had known in advance what to expect.

Also, the emphasis on vigorous range of motion exercises in the beginning was counter-productive for me. I progressed fastest when my tissue had healed. At my six-week checkup, I had 90 degrees of flexion. At the end of six months, I had 103 degrees. Now, at the end of nine months, I have 110 degrees. I’m going to continue going to rehab, even if I have to pay for it myself, because I’m still progressing. Also, my extension was -3 degrees after both six weeks and six months, but is now -1 degree and my PT is confident I can get to zero.

Hi, I had a TKR on my left knee 17 years ago. It has gone well. I’m able to walk without pain, however; I have never been able to kneel Without a large soft cushion under my knee And then not very long.
I had my right knee done (TKR)in 2015. It went Pretty well, my right knee has never been as strong as my left. Once again, I am unable to kneel Except for a very short period of time on a very soft mattress.
I’ve read so many accounts of people’s misfortunes after TKRs and actually consider myself fortunate that I can walk without pain, that I can walk. Not being able to KNEEL seems a small price for being able to walk. Unfortunately, these surgeries are … Experimental.

I’ve had three TKRs. One had to be removed and replaced to deal with an infection; a rare complication but it does happen. With all that personal history, I would still not hesitate to have TKRs as I did with my other knee a couple of years after my infection ordeal. It’s kept me moving and hiking at 74. If you stop moving, in my opinion, things start to seize up.

Agree! I know my knee will never be perfect . I do believe that moving and exercising is my priority daily. My favorite machines are the elliptical and recliner bicycle are the best for me. I do strength training on alternate days. Im choosing quality of living. Getting ready for tkr on the other knee in December.

In particular, I find hiking on trails and uneven surfaces to be particularly helpful as it trains one’s brain for the micro balance adjustments which are so important as we age to maintain mobility.

Very true. Again, exercise with care always. If it hurts or too sore, back off for day.

I had a knee replacement on both knees. On the right over three years ago and the left 5-1/2 months ago. I can kneel now on the right which took about a year, but must use a pillow. Still having a lot of trouble with the other knee. I am hoping by a year it will be fairly better also.
