I have started to choke spontaneously on my own saliva. Anyone else?

Posted by chinasvegas @chinasvegas, Apr 19, 2022

I’m a 75 year old female take no medication and have had no diagnosis. Lately I’m chocking on my own saliva occasionally. The kind of chocking that used to happen only when liquid goes down the wrong way. Now it seems that I spontaneously choke on my own saliva. Anyone have this experience?

You wouldn’t believe what severe acid reflux will do to you! I had many symptoms like this when my doctor told me to change the way I eat. I laughed out loud, because there was no way it could wreak such havoc. I was not a heartburn sufferer, and walked miles every day. Until I couldn’t! It also causes fatigue. Research an alkaline diet, then cut back on the foods contributing to your symptoms. There are several books out there to help you. You will be amazed!

Hello all. I read several responses here that mentioned alkaline diet. In 1970 I came home from Viet Nam with a severe intestinal problem. Pain beyond belief!
I went to the VA hospital in West Los Angeles. In 1970 they called it regional
interitis. The name has changed several times over the years. Acid reflux, IBS, Crohns disease, gerd and others. I think my problem was excess stomach acid due to stress. A couple years ago I was telling a friend about this and he said
" drink lemon in water." I said I would not put more acid in my stomach. He said " lemon is alkaline, not acidic". For years the attacks came on slowly then intensified and they lasted 3 to 4 days. Now if I feel an attack coming on I drink lemon in water. It stops the attack in a short time, less than one hour. I no longer need to take drugs to stop the attacks. Big pharma doesn't like that ! Neither do the corporations that produce Ultra Processed Foods. My diet consists of fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy. I have not researched alkaline.
My best to you All.

Lemon juice is generally considered acidic. It has a pH level between 2 and 3.

Here are some helpful articles with evidence-based research to help untangle the facts and myths about lemon juice in water and acid reflux.

- Lemon Juice: Acidic or Alkaline, and Does It Matter? https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/lemon-juice-acidic-or-alkaline

- The Alkaline Diet: An Evidence-Based Review https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/the-alkaline-diet-myth

More research on the effectiveness of drinking lemon water for acid reflux is still needed. There is no evidence to support the Alkaline Diet. According to research, the foods you eat have very little effect on the pH of your blood.

Yes I choke on my own saliva and drinking. I swallow continually somtimes having trouble like my throat has tightened. It started ( I think) when I had voice changers and coughing. I have touble talking , went to a ENT and he looked at voice cords said they looked ok and said I had MTD = muscle tension around the larynx. Went to speech lady and she gave me great things to help but I feel its got worst. I think its a mind thing too, i get nervous to talk now. With so much salvia sometimes when I talk as well. Avoiding it if I can. I am 64 Lady.

Thank you for posting. I have started to have some difficulty in swallowing. I noticed it when I go to take my medications. Used to, this was easy as could be. Now I have to swallow a lot of extra water to get it down. A friend told me that I should be sure to tell my doctor about this.

redtop10, Just a thought. Have you talked to a Gastroenterologist about this? I wonder if your esophagus needs dilating. It's a very simple procedure. I've had mine done twice and my husband has had his done as well.

They insert a balloon in your esophagus (you are sedated) and they stretch your esophagus. We
were getting choked and food would get stuck. It was painful. This procedure has been
a blessing to us both.

Praying for you. I know its scary for you when you have swallowing issues and can't get your meds to go down.
done.

I noticed that with me too. Twice I felt like I swallowed a golf ball and it got stuck in my throat.

That’s happened to me too. I think I was breathing in while I was swallowing, I think. Sometimes if I start to eat something with vinegar, before I even eat it, breathing in the scent can cause me to choke so much, terrifying.
I take famotadine and I try to remember to sit up straight to keep my airway open.

Do you have CLL? I was wondering if it had to do with that,
