Has anyone ever been on Duloxetine (Cymbalta) for nerve pain?

Has anyone ever been on Duloxetine (Cymbalta) for nerve pain? I've had 2 doctors push this on me. I know that the side effects can be terrible and getting off of it difficult as it requires titration. One time I remember taking one pill, and not liking the way it made me feel, so not taking any more, and still feeling the "weirdness" from it 2-3 days later. and that was only 30 mg Please pass along any experience or advice from this medication?

Thanks for your response. I would like to do PY, but the last time I tried it back in April, it only served to ramp up my pain. I ws hoping that it would help to moderate my chronic pain a bit. It did not. Just about any physical activity causes an increase in my pain.

I hear you in regards to physical activity increasing your pain. People are saying that PT is a good option for peripheral neuropathy, but when I tried it for a couple of times a week for about a month my pain worsened to the point of hating to go back each time. I had to stop. Even walking is painful.

@akila12 those areas are what you lean on if you are a side sleeper.
Have you considered a new pillow, or mattress?

Yes and unfortunately, no success.

Duloxetine does not work the same as ibuprofen, tylenol, etc. In fact, each drug works on different parts of the nervous system when treating pain. Also, not all pain is the same. Sometimes multiple types of treatment are needed to help your brain stop sensing the pain.

Duloxetine takes time to build up to a therapeutic effect, just like it takes time to titrate down the dose when getting off of it. It also may some dose adjustments to identify the right dose. One pill one time, no matter its dose, would not impact your pain, I'm sorry to say. Also, too little duloxetine can be more problematic than too much over some doses.

I've been on duloxetine for about 10 years, starting as a treatment for depression. Over time I've gone up and down in dose depending on the circumstances. Now I have also been diagnosed with other conditions for which nerve pain is a possibility. My new specialists were "pleased" to see that I was already on duloxetine.

That said, I have pain (bone, muscle - not nerve pain) for which I use other things as duloxetine is not effective for these. I have taken different types of NSAIDs, prednisone, etc. to deal with different aspects of my pain.

If you're not satisfied with duloxetine, ask about other options - there are pain specialists too and pain centers that may provide you ways to piece together a solution for you.

Good luck.

The only one drug that lowered my pain,I would never use again,If any Dr can tell you the best way to get off it ,Good luck, side effect are terrible, I went in for Back surgery, they had added fentanyl in the mixture to put me out,I guess nobody checked that I had Duloxetine already in my blood.Well the two together can cause serotonin syndrome which happened to me, It stopped my heart, three sections of CPR ,well here I am,The only side effect of my heat stopping was it started beating again with no irregular or palpation which I had before,Always check side effects of drugs your taking. Cymbalta was a good drug for me for lowering my pain ,if that all your taking ,I found out afterwards that Drug.com make it simple to check drug interaction.

I’ve been on 30mg a day for the past 6 months. I’m not sure if it’s helping- I don’t feel as though it’s harming. I’m also on pregabalin (Lyrica) and Naltroxone and those two seem to be more helpful than anything,

Many drugs have the side effect of destroying a men's libidos. My husband has been on Neurontin and Cymbalta for foot Neuropathy for over 20 years now and sex went out the door along with the start of the meds. He tried other "helps" from shots to pumps, but nothing worked. He can't even get a partial hard-on.

Maybe I can get you to tell my wife this. I struggle with not being able to get hard and if I do manage to get a hard-on, I never reach climax. She thinks it's her but I know it's the duloxetine.

Hi
I was on it after knee surgery because I have fibromyalgia in the pain was just off the chart but coming off it is a nightmare I was on it for 19 months and it makes you sort of numb to emotion controlled the pain and credibly. So when I decided to stop the pharmacist gave me empty capsules so I could count out every Sunday on my prescription 10 little pills from opening the capsule and then putting them in a new capsule I had to do this once a week for 9 months until I got down to 5 mg and the side effects coming off are just horrendous I would never ever take that again

I was given duloxetine for pain which was brought on by chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments. It did not take away the pain but it did make it more bearable. However, I just started having weird thoughts and just not feeling like myself and started doing online research about duloxetine because other than my blood pressure medicine it was the only medicine I was taking and I know that the lisinopril was not making me feel the way I was feeling. I hope to never take duloxetine again after being on it for three months and then weaning myself off. I literally was telling family and coworkers that I’m weaning myself off of a medication and it’s making my thoughts go dark and weird and making me feel not right. I have been off of the duloxetine now for three months and I’m glad I got off of it. Best of success to you @dougs72.

Only thing Gabapentin did for me was make me gain weight. I am taking 120mg Duloxetine along with 600mg Pregabalin daily for pain control (nerve and chronic joint and other body pain). Works well most of the time. If I do something too physical I get more breakthrough pain. I take Duloxetine in the morning and by taking Pregabalin in the evening hours I sleep better. Duloxetine helps all day long and nerve pain doesn’t keep me awake at night any longer. As an added note I recently attempted to double my Duloxetine and keep Pregabalin at 150mg twice daily for all the pain. Did not work as I developed tardive dyskinesia so dropped Duloxetine dosage back and increased Pregabalin. So far it is working and I’m able to stay asleep.

Yes the worst drug ever! I had every side effect. When I went off of it it was horrible. 3 months of intense itching, insanity and I know other thinks I’ve blocked out. After over 18 years of chronic pain due to a bad femoral head fracture the only thing that works for me is Norco. I try hard to stay in dose. Have detoxed 7 times thinking maybe I could live in this pain but I cannot.
