Severe Ozempic Side Effects

Posted by labgirl @labgirl, Nov 16, 2023

I am new to taking ozempic and just started 5 days ago. The prescribed dose was 0.5 mg and I have been so sick ever since I injected that dose.
I'm experiencing nausea, dry heaves, and most unexpectedly, severe anxiety. I feel like I'd like to crawl out of my skin and can't wait till this drug clears my system. I can't eat, but I know it's not healthy to totally forgo essential certain vitamins and minerals. I snack on pretzels because they are bland and have salt.
Has anyone else had an extreme anxiety and sickness response to starting Ozempic?

I was grossly nauseous for a couple months, I also had Baaad gas! From both ends! I'm still on it at dose 2. I don't really get nausea anymore. I have lost 40-50lbs. I was not told, I would lose muscle mass, and I sure did, have to do some chair exercises for me. I'm on. OZEMPIC. Its nice to have lost the weight, and see better results in my A1c etc. I too have eaten quite a few antacids!!! I've been on this at least 6 months. Good luck too you

@labgirl I have been taking Ozempic for many years, beginning with .5 to today with 2mg. I had the same problem with a diabetic dose of Farxiga as you are having with Ozempic. As @cehunt57 says, many medications have side effects. Those side effects can also cause bad lab results. You may also wish to check with your local pharmacist to see if there are any interactions between Ozempic and your current medications.

Can you start at a lower dose? I started at .25. I heard Mounjaro has fewer side effects, but costs more and has more shortages.

@kaki49 NovoNordisk must have changed their dosage requirements as my endo prescribed .5mg at the beginning, the lowest dosage at that time. Remember, Ozempic is primarily designed for type 2 diabetics usually at 1mg or less. The 2mg weekly dosage for Ozempic is for diabetes and hopefully some weight loss will occur. If you are not a type 2 diabetic, Wegovy is a better choice for weight loss. I don't know the difference in cost between Wegovy and Mounjaro, but there is a patient assistance program available for both conpanies for those who qualify. For me, I never had side effects, however Ozempic may cause constipation for some or many.

I had the same problem with Mounjaro. Very sick for a week. Eating lots of protein before taking a dose helped.

Unfortunately these are common side effects of GLP-1 inhibitors. If you don't mind me asking, what is the indication you are taking the medication for? If it is making you that sick, it may be your body's way of telling you that you don't tolerate this class of drugs well. I have seen some patients experience hardly any side effects and others developed persistent/long lasting side effects, with a few very severe. It is always worth considering the risk vs benefit as every drug has side effects, some people simply do not genetically agree with certain drugs either, no matter how long they stay on them.

I WAS PRESCRIBED OZEMPIC 2.5 WITH INCREASE AFTER 1 MONTH. IMMEDIATELY I STARTED MASSIVE THICK SPUTUM THAT COATED MY THROAT. UNABLE TO COUGH IT UP BUT MADE ME NAUSEOUS AND OCCASIONAL VOMITING. I TRIED MUCINEX AND BENADRYL TO TRY TO DRY UP THE SECRETIONS BUT NOTHING HELPED. I HAD OCCASIONAL NAUSEA FROM THE MEDICINE BUT THE POST NASAL DRIP WAS THE WORST. MY DR SAID SHE NEVER HEARD OF ANYONE HAVING A REACTION LIKE THIS TO OZEMPIC. ANYONE ELSE HAVE A SIMILAR REACTION?

If you are dehydrated this could potentially thicken mucus caused by other allergies or conditions (dehydration is a commonality on these drugs). Also, it could be an actual allergic reaction to the drug itself. Have you ever been diagnosed with GERD or acid reflux? is it post nasal drip or is the originating near your esophagus? You aren't taking anything else besides Ozempic?
