Nebulizer cups

I'm trying to learn as much about this AWC as possible.
A lot of you sterilize your nebulizer cups by boiling, microwave, etc.
When I picked up my 6 month nebulizer cup at medical supply store, my cleaning instructions were to just soak in hot soapy water.
The extras I buy from Amazon have instructions in package.
The instructions are do not sterilize.
These I only use for a couple weeks then toss.
I'm afraid to boil my 6 month replacement cup because don't want to take chance of ruining it(melting?).
So many of you write about how the soaking breaks up the biofilm.
If the soaking and swirling breaks up the biofilm then wouldn't a good rinse in hot water be enough after the soaking?

Based on my own home personal tests it is but everyone's risk tolerance is different. My feeling is if I'm going to hyper-focus on anything it ought to be air way clearance top of list, including but not limited to, caution around shower water and for drinking, gardening with a mask, avoidance of conditions well documented that harbor difficult to eradicate bacteria including steam rooms and indoor pools. Of course, keep equipment clean and sterilized; it's possible with slow growing NTM daily sterilizing might be overkill.

Scoop- I asked Dr. Falkinham the other day about MAC on neb cups and Aerobika and this was his information emailed to me in response.
"Some years ago we received Aerobika nebulizers to identify methods to disinfect the devices. The idea was that NTM were able to attach to the interior walls and grow, ultimately forming a biofilm. The biofilm could permanently expose the user to NTM. We’ll put first experiments showed that NTL cells did not attach to the interior surfaces of the Aerobika nebulizers.
Therefore, we didn’t continue any disinfection measurements." Joe

Might that be a disposal nebulizer cup?

Yes Scoop, it’s disposable. I change them every month.

I get one kit from medical supply store every 6 months.
My disposable ones I buy on Amazon, plus there is a medical supply store in area where I can purchase a few.
I don't sterilize the disposable cups. Soak in hot soapy water.
I'm afraid to sterilize 6 month cup because if it melts I have to wait for new one.

Is NTL different from NTM?
I don't sterilize my Aerobika after each session. Just the mouthpiece.
I don't breathe in through it, just out.

My belief is that he meant to use an M rather than an L.

I looked into this awhile back, about breathing only through the aerobika vs in and out. After some research, I learned that the aerobika is designed and best used for breathing in and out.
It creates oscillating positive expiratory pressure (OPEP), which is most effective when you maintain a continuous airflow cycle (inhale and exhale) through the device. Inhaling through the device helps to prepare the airways for the subsequent vibrations and pressure changes during exhalation.

I had hoped that breathing one way would save some cleaning time!

I started out that way breathing in and out according to directions in pamphlet.
When I saw my Nurse David he held up the Aerobika turned his face and took a deep breath then blew into aerobika.
It's very confusing because the first nurse that gave me aerobika took a breath in and out.
I am taking on my next appointment and I'm going to ask about setting.
I put mine on 4 for now.

I listened to a video with Dr. McShane and she was talking about spirometer.
She didn't like the idea of breathing in and out of them because she said you don't know what you are bringing back out.
I started to think same way about Aerobika.
I really like her videos. She is dedicated.

What brand of nebulizer are you using? When you say you "get one kit from medical supply store every 6 months", what is in the kit?
You can buy non-disposable cups and kits with the hose that fit virtually all nebulizers from medical supply houses like Nebology or JustNebulizers whenever you want without a prescription. I always keep some on hand.

A cup, bobble, top then a two way top? Mouthpiece.
It also comes with this accordion like attachment,
I really like using. Just takes forever to dry.
I get disposable ones for backup.
I don't want to boil my 6 month kit. I was using peroxide but now using alcohol.
I put a mask on when I use the alcohol.
I found a medical store close by where I can purchase disposable kits.
Cheaper than Amazon.
