Short video on nebbing saline

Posted by bronchiectasaurus @bronchiectasaurus, 3 days ago

Hi all, I just made a video about how I nebulize saline to manage bronchiectasis. I've never actually seen a video of someone doing all this stuff, so I made one myself!

Great question! It's to prevent mineral buildup on the equipment. You can boil in tap water instead, but then you have to soak everything in vinegar at least once a week to remove mineral scale. Using distilled water lets you skip this step, and protects your lungs from inhaling lime and other mineral crust along with saline.

I do soak mine in dawn and hot water after every use, but boil 1x week. Do you think the dawn/water removes any of the mineral buildup? (Just trying to keep things as easy as possible since it’s already a big pita☹️

I don’t think soaking in Dawn removes mineral scale. Maybe if the water in your Dawn soak is distilled, you will get less mineral buildup? This is why I settled on daily boiling in distilled water, skipping the Dawn soak and the vinegar soak. Because I boil every day I don’t fear tenacious biofilms; if I did (it’s not an unreasonable concern) I would soak in Dawn also. Everyone settles on the trade-offs they can live with, and this is mine.

I soak in Dawn after every neb, and every other day boil. I also soak in vinegar for 1 hr. or more once a week to get the minerals off. Great video and thanks a lot. I've been flying by the seat of my pants for over a year now, but luckily I guess I've been doing it right for me.
This site and encouragement from others has helped me so much.

I soak mine in dawn and rinse immediately after each use, and boil in distilled water 1/week. I also disinfect daily 1/day since I use the aerobika flutter device/neb parts in the morning and an additional nebulizer (without the flutter device) in evening. After nebulizing in the evening, I throw both am and pm parts into the microwaveable bag and microwave for 3 minutes. Maybe overkill but it's fairly easy.

I never didn't think about the mineral build up, I will add soaking in 6% acid vinegar 1/month.

Never thought abt mineral buildup, so I’ll add one of these options to my routine ugh. Thanks so much for all the input!

@bronchiectasaurus Would it be possible to confirm something for me? My Grownsy [travel] sterilizer is modular, meaning I can use the accessories tray without the middle tank. Can yours be used in a similar setup? Here's a picture in case it helps explain my question.

Thanks for sharing your journey and posting the video. It really helps to have a visual. Can you explain how the aerobika works while nebbing? When you inhale the saline it just goes through the mouthpiece then it’s activated upon exhaling? Makes sense to combine therapy when possible. I also like your glass jar to store the saline vials. So much better than me just storing the tacky box they came in on the counter!
