Short video on nebbing saline

Posted by bronchiectasaurus @bronchiectasaurus, Jul 14 6:24pm

Hi all, I just made a video about how I nebulize saline to manage bronchiectasis. I've never actually seen a video of someone doing all this stuff, so I made one myself!

Is it necessary to boil if you are using the Bololo sterilizer/dryer? I wash/soak my nebulizer pieces with dawn in very hot water, rinse with distilled water, and then transfer to the Bololo sterilizer/dryer. I usually use the SmartVest instead of an Aerobika. If I use the Aerobika, I use the same cleaning process on those pieces.

I believe she used the BBS (baby bottle sterilizer) for drying only.

There are mixed opinions on whether the Bololo stays hot long enough to achieve killing off NTM. I rinse, soak in Dawn, rinse with tap water, boil 10 minutes (sea level), then Bololo all cycles. Store equipment in Bololo . My thought, overkill doesn’t hurt. Some reuse the equipment after just washing and only boil once a week. I don’t know that there is a hard and fast rule, maybe from NJH? Another FB group believes boiling is the only way to guarantee sterilization. I lean towards this thought. It’s not difficult. Just set a timer so you don’t damage your equipment by boiling the water away.
A lot of overthinking and different opinions.

You didn’t miss anything. She said she never uses soap because she boils every day. I agree with you, the soap breaks up the biofilm on the equipment. I rinse and soak with Dawn free and clear unscented then boil. I don’t agree with not covering the equipment for drying either. I take mine from boiling into the Bololo sterilizer/dryer and run the full cycle with the cover on. I do four sets and leave it covered removing as needed until time to sterilize them all again.
Not everyone does it the same way, but this is what I settled on after much research and advice.

FWIW I put the cover on after drying, to protect my parts from dust. But I started drying with it off because it only blocks the evaporation during the drying cycle. The cover needs to be used for the steam cycle, so the steam stays close to the parts, but I don't use that cycle.

Thanks for watching!

Thank you for clarifying. Your video is a great resource. Visuals help so much. My biggest problem with it is your “cough fee cup”. I see myself unthinkingly picking it up and taking a swig of “coffee”. 🤢 I’ll never use a cup that looks like a real coffee cup for that reason. Yes, I know don’t drink and neb.

LOL. I edited a lot out of this video for brevity/staying on point (over an hour cut down to under 10 minutes). I cut the bit where I said I don't drink coffee AND I live alone! I think both of those conditions need to be met to use a cough-ey cup.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Very helpful! One question: why use distilled water for boiling instead of tap?

Great question! It's to prevent mineral buildup on the equipment. You can boil in tap water instead, but then you have to soak everything in vinegar at least once a week to remove mineral scale. Using distilled water lets you skip this step, and protects your lungs from inhaling lime and other mineral crust along with saline.

This is something I wondered about if the Bololo stays hot enough long enough so I did my own test. My home test with a Thermpen (rapid read thermometer) measured over 212F for 13 minutes. That's suitable for me so I use it for sterilization and I have recaptured daily time, effort and expense. The Grownsy that I travel with is not as robust (212 for 8 minutes) which for short term use is good enough for me.

In the future, science may be able to identify exact exposure levels and sources of bacteria like Pseudomonas and NTM, and perhaps even provide home tests to detect these organisms. Until then, we each do what we believe works best for us.

Great video! I like the dryer, do you know the brand?
Thank you!!
