Bp meds adverse effects

Posted by cher1947 @cher1947, Jun 28 2:56pm

I have been on 3 blood pressure medicines for about 5 years. They are Toprol XL,50 amlodopine besylate and 100mg. Losartan. Since January I have intentionally lost 39 lbs since diagnosed with prediabetes. After this I have had many adverse reactions. Shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, aching all over, depression and anxiety. Wondering if meds could cause this. Have had all kinds of bloodwork, Ct scans, everything comes back normal. Do have acid reflux. Could u give opinion?

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, Scott! especially interesting to hear about the blood sugar issue. I've had type 2 diabetes for 27 years, and fairly well-controlled until this stroke. NOW, I've had a much harder time keeping it down (even with insulin) the last 6 weeks ever since my stroke. The very high blood pressure is new, though, and very scary, as is the severe arm and hand pain keeping me awake at night.

Yeah, I actually had to shoot insulin for a few months after the stroke. About 40 units/day, 20 AM and 20 PM.

Then one day...I didn't need it at all. Instead, I couldn't get my blood sugar *up*. I was eating candy like...well, candy. I had to keep honey and cola on standby at all times.

That lasted about three months. Then I stabilized.

But the pain...For about 18 months I was in continual torment, taking large doses of ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and naproxen like there was no tomorrow -- because for me, I wasn't sure I would survive through the nights.

Doctors were useless; they wouldn't prescribe anything and then told me to quit taking painkillers because they were affecting my bloodwork. Like I cared.

Again, it sort-of moderated. Pain is still my constant companion. I sleep very poorly. It's now been nearly 7 years since I had a decent night's sleep. I guess it will be like that until I die.

@cher1947 Carvedilol is a beta blocker, and can definitely cause a number of the symptoms you mention, especially if you have asthma or any other lung condition.
My only concern is whether you have shared this change with your provider, and whether you are frequently monitoring your blood pressure to make sure it stays under the target set by your provider?
If so, I am glad it is working for you. Otherwise there are many other BP meds to try which do not have the same side effects.

Lisinopril did terrible things to me.
Dizziness, depression, ideations of suicide, shortness of breath, just to name a few.
Nasty stuff. I won't ever take it again.

I took Toprol for about 19 years and it seemed like a great med for me. It seemed to stop dizziness and fainting. Then after all that time, I had shortness of breath at night and the doc weaned me off Toprol slowly. About a week after the withdrawal was complete, I had afib for the first time. I believe the afib may have been set off by a heart monitor I was wearing, plus the absence of the Toprol to regularize heart rate. Doc does not believe me. Expert programmer says that I should try explaining to medical people in terms of heat and skin irritation near my heart rather than in terms of radio frequency. The current medically established belief is that RF cannot affect heart rhythm. After all, cell phone radiation is absolutely and perfectly and supremely good for you, as science proves objectively and without profit motives. (Note sarcasm) So heart monitor RF is just like that of the cell phone, says the doc.

I'm sorry to hear that. Especially since my doc has me taking Lisinopril while recovering from stroke a month ago, and my BP has been extremely high. Taking 20mg.
Plus half a 25mg Metoprolol tablet. BP coming down slowly, but still high.
Anyone else have experience with these? Trying to prevent another stroke...

@grrranny I had multiple strokes 2 years ago from nocturnal high BP do to sleep apnea. Lisinopril/Amlodipine combo has my BP 105/64 average all night but I'm tired and weak. Stairs have my legs burning and puffing. I didn't have it before the meds

@bigobrad Have you talked with your doctor? I'm not a doctor and certainly have no expertise with ACE inhibitors, but maybe there are alternatives that would avoid these awful side effects.

Do you check your blood pressure at home? Do you get different readings than at the doctor's office? I know people who have severe "white coat syndrome"; their BP readings are astronomical at the doctor, but normal at home. Maybe you're in that category.
