I underwent hiatel hernia surgery several years back. The 100% wrap immediately failed, then 2 more attempts failed. I have an extended stomach, constipation and gastroparesis since then. From all of the prodding and probing I've gone through along with hours of my personal research, suggests my Vegas nerve was damaged during the procedure thus all of the issues I am experiencing. My suggestion is due diligence on the potential physician you select to do the surgery by checking their past patient's success rate to determine if any of them experienced a damaged Vegas nerve. I understand attempts to rectify a damaged Vegas nerve have a low percentage of success. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I had hiatal hernia surgery with fundoplication in December 2014. The only after effects I’ve had is I cannot vomit and gas. The surgery was done laparoscopically

All four (4) of my surgeries were performed laparoscopically also. You are very lucky. I wasn't so lucky. The comment i made was only a response to a question from a person requesting suggestions as to experiences others who have had the laparoscopic procedure performed to correct a hiatel hernia.

I had a Nissen Fundoplication surgery at Mayo Rochester on October 18, 2016. I had a 4 cm hiatal hernia, and suffered from GERD since 2004.

Since the surgery to fix the hernia and malfunctioning sphincter between my esophagus and stomach, I have had NO heartburn -- at all! This is awesome because Mayo also figured out that I don't properly metabolize both PPIs and H2 antagonist medications, and taking these medications was basically slowly killing me.

So glad I had this surgery, and I ADORE my Mayo GI/Hepatology and Thoracic Surgery team!

I had hiatal hernia repair that failed just two months afterwards. I think this might be because I have chronic constipation and strain. I am told there is a 50% chance this second surgery on Oct 2 will fail. The dr said then she would have to do open surgery which I am scared of because I have breast implants. I am hoping if I eat smaller meals and try not to strain on the toilet this second surgery will work. Has anyone else had similar experiences ?

I had surgery 11 years ago and for the first couple years it was great. Unfortunately the hernia is back, bigger than before. But....I still don't have terrible heartburn and reflux like I had before the first surgery.
Good luck,
Steph

Has anyone one had hiatal hernia repair at UVA Charlottesville Va
I am having my second one Oct 2. The first one failed after two months. The surgeon doesn’t use mesh which I am glad about.
