Oral Lichen Planus: How do you cope with it?
I have been diagnosed with oral lichen planus for over 12 years. Originally it was mild and able to control with Duke’s Mouthwash. In last 5 months have had two major flareups with considerable pain. My condition was managed by my general dentist. I now feel I need someone who specializes in OLP, but have had no luck finding anyone. I live in the Columbia, MD area which is near Baltimore. Does anyone know an OLP specialist in my area?

I now just see local dermatologist for my OLP (and VLP). Went to UF doctos for 3 years. Once you get biopies for OLP diagnosis confirmation, not much any doctor or specialist can do but prescribe steriods (liquid or pills) or Magic mouthwash, when have flare up. I just had ton of dental work (teeth removal, one graphs, implants , etc.) - but when had flare up, had to reschedule appts because inside mouth and lips too sensitive to touch.
I have had OLP for 5 years now and its like most autoimmune diseases i.e. it comes and goes and varies in intensity. Stress can be trigger too but as long as follow rules to avoid irritants (citrus, acidic foods, spice foods, mint, cinnamon, sometimes carbonated beverages irritate). I love apple juice but like feels like acid if having flare up. I will break down and have Margarita once year on my birthday, but usually pay dearly for it!!
I'm overly sensitive to toothpaste additive like mint. I've tried soooo many over the years. I've found children's toothpaste works best--milder. The one I'm using is by Hello and is watermelon flavored. I will be trying the coconut oil rinsing soon. I'm using Dexamethazone Rx now but would like to go more natural.
Does anyone with OLP have a vomit taste in their mouth, all the time?
My dental hygienist recommended Guru Nanda coconut oil pulling. I really don’t like all that swishing and spitting. Also for me, I’ve not seen any change at all from this therapy. My recommendation is not to spend lots of money on this until you tried it and it is something you’re willing to do.
No never. I presume you do. I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this on top of having the disease.
Brilliant!
Yes. I'm good at oral hygiene, etc. I googled this once, and one site said it was exudate/drainage from ulcerations and/or blisters. But even when I'm free of those 2 things, there's a vomit taste. Oh well, life goes on....God bless!
Sugar is my worst offender. I removed it completely from my way of eating and have not had a flare in two years. You have to be very conscientious in reading labels. Sugar is in so many foods. Not easy, but so worth it.
@mcbail44 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! We’re glad you found us. How can you possibly remove sugar from your diet>. Isn’t sugar in fruits, even? I’m so impressed!
I didn’t eat any fruit at all for a month, than I added a little back occasionally. I really lost my taste for anything sweet.
