Welcome @aredwards069, You might want to look into the metabolic syndrome and its relationship with neurological conditions since it’s associated with diabetes.

I have idiopathc peripheral neuropathy. I experienced balance problems about 10 years ago - I walked like a drunk and fell over for no apparent reason. I went to a doctor who specializes in this sort of problem and I was diagnosed as having a lack of proproception (my feet and my brain don't talk to each other). I have been dealing with peripheral neuropathy as best I can. I read everything I can find about PN, I go to the gym 3 x a week and walk with a cane. It's important to find a neurologist who will perform tests to determine the type of PN you have (I tried 3 neurologists before I found one that I'm comfortable with). Google the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy for good information. Don't give up - keep demanding that your doctor work with you and ask for the help you need to live your life the best way that you can.

I first noticed my balance issues in 2017. I had back surgery that was supposed to cure the balance issues. No change. Physical therapy was also not successful. I made a appointment with a Hearing & Balance Clinic, which found "poor lower trunk control". Next was Neurologist #1, who confirmed PN. He suggested using a cane. I have tried every medication for PN, nothing worked. I spent $4000 to attend a Spine Clinic for eight weeks - no improvement. Neurologist #2 suggested using Volteran. No one ever suggested any kind of testing. I've finally found a neurologist that is taking me seriously. I've had a EMG, which shows nerve damage. I have a follow-up appointment to discuss the results.

Check with your doctor to see if walking in a pool (preferably a warming pool) would be helpful for you. I have had several balance issues and water therapy has helped me tremendously.
Many different diseases and treatments have been contributed here. So, I'll give mine. I had been falling frequently. I forget words and peoples' names. I drop things also frequently. My primary care doctor sent me to a Neurologist. After the examination, she told that I had presented my own diagnosis. She said I had Parkinson's Disease. I had many more blood tests, MRIs, EMG (Don't know if that's the right letters). checking nerves and probably more. The medicine eased my symptoms. (Doctors had been telling me to pick up my feet, for example.) My husband and I went to the Michael J. Fox Foundation Educational Conference. I learned a lot, there were vendors in one room representing different organizations doing different research and places around Minnesota for treatment. They are asking people who want to take part in the research.
