Incontinence and coffee

Posted by edinmaryland @edinmaryland, 3 days ago

71 y.o had RARP in January, nagging incontinence since however I can see improvement, less leakage, better in the mornings, dry at night Still, I imagine I have at least several months to go if I am lucky.

I am taking Gemtessa and have tried to avoid bladder irritants. It has been five months since I have had coffee and I miss it.It really is my only vice. I understand that both the caffeine and acid can be bladder irritants and I certainly do not want anything to make me go backwards. However, I was thinking of trying a half cup to see what happens (low acid, maybe caffeine free for starters. has anyone else had experience with re-starting coffee under these circumstances?? thanks much

Just try the real thing and see what happens. Life without coffee is bleak lol

I sometimes feel a little dense
For example, when I tried riding my exercise bike it took me three days to figure out that I was leaking significantly more, having trouble at might etc. When I stopped these symptoms went away but it took me three days to figure it out.
How do bladder irritants become noticeable? more urge to urinate? discomfort, bloating ??
I tried a cup of low acid decaf this morning ( first trial of coffee in five months) and then went for a walk and during the walk I was leaking big time way more than I have been. Could this have been this one little cup of coffee?? ( I guess anything is possible)

Same as me. I limit myself to 6 ounces of coffee and no more. It's tough but it is better than no coffee.

Thanks very much. It may seem minor but I sure would like to get back on coffee. On the other hand, I hate incontinence and everything that goes with it.
I am so happy for those guys that did not experience any incontinence and to those guys also who got right back into 'business as usual days or weeks after RARP. I cannot imagine trying to work with a catheter in.
I want continence asap.

There are two types of coffee beans: Robusta has the higher caffeine levels. That variety was the source of pharmaceutical caffeine. The caffeine helps absorption of the 'active' ingredient. The other type is Arabica which has less. It would be good to check ingredients in regularly used over the counter meds if urinary tract irritation is an issue. The acidity might be mitigated with cinnamon in the paper filter for drip makers. Gevalia brand claims its coffee is deacidified. It is available in many supermarkets.

I’m no expert but I wouldn’t think so; no caffeine, low acid (coffee-ols) should make it just like water. Could be the speed of the walk or simply prolonged incontinence due to treatment.
Unfortunately, some men suffer more damage than others no matter how diligent the surgeon, RO or the patient.

Thanks to both of you
It is probably prolonged incontinence and maybe a longer walk than usual
I am goign to try the low acid decaf every other day for a while then maybe a small cup of regular coffee in a week.
I appreciate everyone's feedback and this list

Carbonic acid is the reason for every soda's fizz.

@edinmaryland
It seems my urination problems have gotten worse 2 years after my radiation treatments ended.

I seem to not urinate completely and will dripple afterward. When I do need to go the urgeny will build and if I don't get to urninal in time it will come out regardless of what I do.

Now it seems every time I urinate there is always some left in tract and will dripple out. I do drink decaf coffee and a coke product called Coke Cherry Zero. It does have caffiene but no sugar just an artificial one.

One thing strange for me is I can urinate. Then go to wash my hands and the running water makes me want to urinate again.
I am 78 and really irritates me to have this. Will be meeting with my R/O at my 2 year after treatment date and will discuss with him.

I hope it resolves for you. I can't stand incontinence issues. I understand that some just 'get on with their life' it is better than cancer and I agree but it has not been that easy for me

I have been on Gemtessa i wonder if that might be helpful for you
