Neuropathy sudden stiffness in my feet & ankles.

Has anyone had a sudden flare up of stiffness in the feet & ankles? Came on suddenly over night. Worst in 15 years. I don’t know why now.

This sudden stiffness in my feet is something I woke up with this morning. Last night I was okay--I had exercised and was picking up marbles with my toes to keep them flexible. Someone I spoke to at the Arthritis Foundation said these kind of flares might be weather-related. You are not alone--we are trying to figure out what the triggers are and if there is any way we can control them. We seem to know more and more about food and gut issues. Stress, too, is a known trigger. How about temperature and bariatric pressure? Some sensations may be due to footwear--shoes and socks. Perhaps, medicines, vitamins...

The one additional med I’ve taken is Amoxicillin for nasal congestion- nothing else changed. I stopped it yesterday but the stiffness continues. This has been truly a shock after years of constant symptoms & it’s really debilitating. I just heard of nerve grafts, which I’m beginning to research. Does anyone know about nerve grafts?
Thanks

I got my feet stretched out in PT today & it helped my ankles but my feet are still very tight. I’ve got to ride my bike hard & often for the most relief but when I’m not able to it’s rough.

Is it a tightness like someone has put extremely tight compression socks on you where it feels crushing or a feeling of stiffness? Is it a feeling of cramping?

I wonder if your riding your bike helps increase circulation which relieves some of the tightness you experience by bringing oxygen and nutrients plus increasing blood pressure in the tissues which temporarily relieving the pain.

AI mentions the following about infections, amoxicillin and neuropathy:

“ Amoxicillin is a commonly prescribed antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. While it is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects. Nerve pain or damage is not a typical side effect of amoxicillin, but there are a few considerations to keep in mind:
Allergic Reactions: Some people may have allergic reactions to amoxicillin, which can manifest as skin rashes, itching, or swelling. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions can lead to anaphylaxis, which requires immediate medical attention.
Neuropathy: Although not common, there have been rare reports of peripheral neuropathy associated with the use of certain antibiotics, including amoxicillin. Symptoms may include tingling, numbness, or pain in the extremities.
Gastrointestinal Issues: Common side effects of amoxicillin include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. These gastrointestinal issues can sometimes lead to discomfort that may be perceived as nerve pain.
Drug Interactions: If amoxicillin is taken with other medications, there may be interactions that could potentially lead to nerve-related symptoms. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking.
Underlying Conditions: If you have pre-existing conditions that affect the nerves, such as diabetes or autoimmune disorders, you may be more susceptible to nerve pain, which may not be directly related to amoxicillin.
If you are experiencing nerve pain or any unusual symptoms while taking amoxicillin, it is important to consult your healthcare provider. They can evaluate your symptoms, determine if they are related to the medication, and suggest appropriate alternatives or treatments.”

I really appreciate your comments. I was thinking the Amoxicillin might have had something to do with this discomfort. Yes, it was like extremely tight compression socks were causing it. I’m still coughing a bit & will check with my doctor but I can’t wait to get on my bike & ride. Riding does help with the pain, tightness, circulation & peace of mind. The problem, of course, is when you need an antibiotic you’ve got think twice now about the side effects. Thanks again for your insight.

For the toes I bought marbles at the 99cent store and I pick them up one by one and put them in a plastic bowl. This seems to reduce the stiffness there. I was told by my physical therapist that neuropathy does not like ice. Yet, Dr. Terry Wahls, famous for her protocols on MS (where neuropathy may be prevalent) says a twenty-minute ice bath can be helpful. Like you, I don't quite understand the reason for flares--I do not think the doctors offer much help on that either. Perhaps that is where meditation and intuition can be useful.

That problem is exactly why I just signed in and wondered about myself. I pray we find some answers. My theory is the crazy up and down weather, I believe it affects the nerves, just an opinion. Hoping you feel better soon. I’ve been using a anti itch cream called cortisone 10 and ice on my feet, it helps.
