Oral Lichen Planus: How do you cope with it?
I have been diagnosed with oral lichen planus for over 12 years. Originally it was mild and able to control with Duke’s Mouthwash. In last 5 months have had two major flareups with considerable pain. My condition was managed by my general dentist. I now feel I need someone who specializes in OLP, but have had no luck finding anyone. I live in the Columbia, MD area which is near Baltimore. Does anyone know an OLP specialist in my area?

The Tom's stawberry worked for me as well.
Ive had this about 18 months. The worst is a lesion on my lower lip. It is raw all the time!
I use Biotene specially formulated to not irritate toothpaste. It does have fluoride, but this toothpaste doesn’t irritate my mouth. I also use Canker X Rincinol mouth sore rinse before eating a food that might irritate my mouth.
I've had OLP for 5 years now. Nobody local wanted to touch me. Finally went to UF in Gainesvialle, FL to see specialist. She and surgeon did biopsy both prescrived Dexamethasone 0.5mg/5ml Elixir (oral steriod rinse) when have outbreaks. Only use sparingly becasuse will thin your skin.
Also had "Magic Mouthwash" prescribed when having bad episodes/open sores - very soothing. Has to be made up by compound pharmacy. Normally prescribed cancer patients with mouth sores.
Same other above - avoid spicy foods, avoid too hot food/beverages, Happy Tooth great (tried Sensodyne and felt like acid!), avoid sharp foods (cerals, chips, etc) - OR tear into tiny pieces.
@flpeach is Happy Tooth a toothpaste? Where do you get it, besides Amazon?
I, too, have been using Dexamethasone Elixir for my lichen planus for around 14 years with great success. When I tried to get my prescription refilled a couple of months ago, pharmacist said it was on back order with no date of resuming. I’m so upset. I had a compounding pharmacy make up a Fluocinonide 0.05% Oral rinse?. I’m not confident on its effectiveness, but I’ll reserve final judgement for awhile. Thanks for reminding me of Magic Mouthwash! I live in the Gainesville area also☺️
I also went to UF and saw a specialist. His recommendation was no mint in and form, so cinnamon and other spices. Take down my stress level. The toothpaste I use is Fennel flavored and I buy on Amazon. I’ve only had one flare up in the past 3 years
I have trays made by the oral surgeon I was working with at U of Illinois Dental Clinic. She prescribed a steroid, which I put onto the trays and then wore for 20 minutes.
If you are near a university with a dental clinic, go there. That is where I went ( University of Illinois Dental Clinic) to get my diagnosis and treatment). The oral surgeon is the type of dentist I saw at the Dental Clinic.
Thank you Mayo Clinic and all the people commenting here about OLP. I appreciate all the comments and suggestions! I am using some of these listed here but also wanted to mention that I started taking Genuine Essiac Tea. It has helped people with cancer and Lupus so I decided to try it for OLP. With OLP being so rare it's hard to find natural products that have been tried and are successful. If you decide to look into this, there are copy cats so make sure you go to the Genuine Essiac tea site. It takes 6 months minimum to get results so I'm continuing with hopeful patience.
Yes got on Amazon but they have their own website. Mint and Cinnamon are apparently OLP triggers.....good luck finding AN Y dental product without those 2 flavors!. I'm usually ok with mint products when not having flare up. Happy Tooth makes a vanilla frosting flavor that I use now when have OLP flare up. Here is there website https://tryhappytooth.com.
