3rd knee replacement in a year and a half on same knee

Posted by mollymay @mollymay, Feb 20 6:09am

I had a total knee replacement in May 2023, with pain and swelling and was unstable. Surgeon said I had to have a revised knee surgery 6 months after the first in. He told me that he didn't put the cement in the bone for the implant to be stable. After the second replacement I continue to have pain and swelling he told me that all x-rays looked good. I have been to 6 different rehabs for therapy with no results. 4 weeks ago He said that I needed to have the spacer replaced because he put the smallest one in and it needed to be higher. I am still having pain and swelling. Now I don't know what to do. I am a 65 year old female that was active be for the first knee surgery, now it hurts to stand from a setting position and feels like a tight band around my knee. If you have any information that will help I will greatly appreciate it.

I surely feel for you, But you are not alone in your quest..
I had 3 same knee surgeries .. First one put no cement in and I could not walk.
2nd opinion , said it was also twisted a little, got along ok but pain around the knee never went away.
Third one, I had blood test that cost mr $600.. as medicare does not pay for it. I am off the charts allergic to nickel. He put in a titanum knee and I was so very very happy . Only had to do 2 sessions with pt. I could do everything , did not have to use walker or cane. I had no problems until 6 months out and my knee started to buckle. He said I needed pt again and gave me injection. I went to pt, they said they could no nothing for me as I did not need them. So on i go. suffering with the pain. After one year i go back for check up and asked if i could be allergic to this knee and he said no. Sent me to pt again this time with ultrasound on the knee. After 12 sessions pt released me and told me to go back to dr. Dr. said there was nothing left to do.
So I live with the pain,, not happy, can not stand for long, can not walk any distance, have gained weight from sitting so much.. I would never recommend this surgery to anyone.

I had my appointment with the sergeant yesterday. After looking at all the results and x-rays of my back he came in and told me that my back was in bad shape but he didn't think it had anything to do with my knee. He got a report from the doctor that did my second opinion stating that the tendon that runs from the side outer side of the knee down and around the front is what's giving me the problem that it's irritated and swollen and he wanted to give me a cortisone shot, I told him that he had given me a cortisone shot the first time I was having problems with the knee and it did not do anything. And I asked him if there was any tests that can be done to find out for sure without guessing and doing certain things that probably would not work. He then told me that he could do 1 of 3 things a cortisone shot, or he can go in and debrief the knee or he could go in and release the tendon and clean out the scar tissue. I told him I didn't want to do anything until he knew for sure if this was in fact the problem so now he's getting me scheduled for an MRI so that he could see the tendons and the irritation around the knee itself. So now just waiting to hear back to have the MRI done.

I am in a similar state of not being able to get treatment from others doctors in my area. They don’t want to redo or check other doctors work. My surgeon will not do a MRI and referred me to pain management. In other words, he is done with me. I don’t know how to get resolution. Mayo denied me. I am looking into an independent knee center out of state as I am miserable. I have been dealing with pain over 3 years from knee surgeries!

I have two neighbors both in their 70’s who have had total knee replacements and both are fine.

You are not alone but these complications are not common. I have found a nice community online with people suffering with arthrofibrosis who have all suffered with failed joint replacements (due to excessive scar tissue development). This may not be your issue but your struggle is similar. I have had multiple revisions on the same knee, struggled with pain and function dysfunction and lots of judgement from people who not know the more common complication-free outcomes.
There are surgeons who specialize or have additional training in performing revisions and you might consult some. Since revisions are not as common not all surgeons have extra competence in dealing with these kind of complications. I have had to drive over 2 hours and now am flying several hours to get to the expertise I need. After all of the surgeries at this point some things are just not going to completely resolve for me but I can hope for a better life with less pain and better function. But I had to be my own advocate and find the resources I needed and you can too. Don’t give up and don’t be afraid to seek other supportive experts, such as counselors and compassionate body workers who can give you comfort while you work to find a structural solution. What you have suffered is a major loss and there are few who can understand what you are going through. But there is a small community of people who do. Find them

Although I don't have as much experience as the others in this conversation, I would like to mention another possible avenue of help. If you can find a good physiatrist, they could help figure out if the pain is from the new knee appliance or from the tendons, ligaments, muscles, bursae or nerves in the leg around the joint. The source of the pain matters. 30% of knee replacement patients suffer with chronic pain afterwards, according to the physiatrist who is curing mine. Any or all of those soft tissues can be injured or stressed to the point of chronic inflammation and pain by the trauma of the surgery. They can also sustain injury after the surgery because your posture, leg length, and the alignment of the joint changes. Everything from your foot up into your back is forced to adjust, and the process of adjusting can put additional strain on surrounding tissues. I have struggled for 11 months with this soft tissue pain, which was aggravated by an injury from a bad physical therapist. In my own case it turned to be knee bursitis, inflamed ileotibial band and hip bursitis along with 4 back muscle strains. The back gradually healed with stretches and correct posture, but the rest of the leg got worse over time. Four doctors missed the diagnosis. The fifth one got it right and 4 sonar shockwave treatments have finally fixed the leg. I can exercise, and go up and down stairs, and even sleep at night. So, keep trying different doctors till you find one who wants to look at all the options. If you do have a soft tissue injury you might want to consider trying shockwave. No needles, no knives, no therapy, BUT insurance does not cover it yet. Prices here on the west coast start at around $250 per session. I hope you find some help. No one should have to live with chronic pain after surgery. Good luck.

Wow, your story sounds so similar to mine. I've gone to so many doctors finally found a very good osteopath who diagnose the IT band inflammation and bursa under patella and also pain and inflammation and in surrounding tissue. I've had several treatments, including steroid injections, and saline. I recently had a CT scan the hardware's still perfectly intact so I 6wks ago had PRP. Injections that I paid for out-of-pocket. I felt I had some relief but limited I'm going to have another injection next Friday, but I'm going to talk to my doctor about the shockwave therapy. It gives me a lot of hope that it might work. Thanks for sharing the info

I got surgery done at HSS in NY
Totally messed up. Another surgeon in PHILLY redid the surgery but only corrected part of the problem. Implant size is too big. Only solution is third surgery. That is risky and no surgeons wants to touch it. Total neglience and greed (do not take medicare only cash so add more surgeries on same day)by surgeons

Similar story. Three and half years and two surgeries and I am in more pain now than four years back. Surgeons do no listen to you and once they mess up do not want anything g with you.
One more thing my surgeons did not mention my symptoms like swelling, pain on patient portal so they can over themselves
