How to mix NAC with Albuterol

Posted by reneemc @reneemc, 3 days ago

I just received a prescription for nebulized NAC. It came in a vial, says mix 2 milliliters with Albuterol. How to get it out of the vial? Then where to store the vial?

@reneemc If you are using NAC at the direction of your doctor, you should contact him or the pharmacist for mixing instructions. If you decided on your own to use it, perhaps with your lung history you should also ask for guidance before starting.

When I was prescribed NAC, it came in a vial good for I think 72 or 96 hours. The pharmacy provided an eye dropper to withdraw the NAC to use for Nebulizing. I think I was using 4 ml each session. Any left overs in the bottle had to be discarded. I believe different options are available, ie individual bottles for each session as once opened the solution needs to be refrigerated.

@reneemc I was prescribed NAC and it also came in big bottles. Like you, I had no idea how I was supposed to administer it. I asked my pharmacist who seemed equally uncertain, but did give me a couple of syringes. They suggest I follow up with my doctor, which I did. After a lot of confusion and uncertainty, I decided I was not comfortable with the contamination risks presented by the large bottles. Someone on this list shared that the medication does come in single use vials (4ml, my doctor said this is what they use in hospital), so I asked my doctor to prescribe the single use vial version. This just happened recently and I haven’t ordered the single use vials yet as the prescription doesn’t seem correct with the online pharmacy and I have been out of town. But so you know, there are single use vials that don’t require reuse and refrigeration like the large bottles. It just takes some legwork to get them.
