Hello @hoppet. This is such a heartbreaking story. Your dear friend has been facing an incredible challenge for some time with her stage 4 cervical cancer and kidney failure. Now, an added diagnosis of AML is certainly further complicating her condition.
There are different forms of AML, (acute myeloid leukemia); Some being more aggressive than others, requiring different treatments.
To my knowledge these are the possible treatments;
Chemotherapy, Radiation therapy, Chemotherapy with stem cell transplant, and targeted therapy…all of which would be arduous for someone who is already so compromised health-wise, with very limited treatment options.
For now, until her doctors feel she may be able to proceed with treatment for AML, palliative care would help keep your friend (loved one) comfortable while she continues with her cervical cancer care and dialysis for kidney failure.
Palliative care is not the same as hospice. Palliative care is a specialized form of care that provides symptom relief, comfort and support to people living with serious or chronic illnesses. It also provides support to caregivers and those impacted by a loved one’s condition.
Have her doctors talked about any possibility of low-intensity treatments for her AML?
