Achieving the unachievable despite epilepsy - how about you?

Posted by Dan Noyes @dannoyes, Jun 12, 2025

If I had thought last year, when I was heavily drugged and sedated by an overzealous (non-Mayo) neurologist, that I would wake myself up at 4:50 a.m., lace up my running shoes, and run two miles, I would have said they were crazy. Today, that is precisely what I did. Granted, I'm having multiple seizures a week, but this image should remind each of us that we can achieve far greater than we ever thought possible. It absolutely does not remove our diagnosis or difficult days, but it shows there is a champion within each of us.

Thank you for reminding us that we are not epilepsy and everything in us is still possible.

Amen. Polypharmacy is terrible. In January my lamotrigine dosage was reduced. I was having GI issues. The reduction.went from 200 mg daily to lamotrigine ER generic
100mg daily. I am seizure free. Still. 11 plus years. I live in NM. On August 1 I can legally drive here again. In AZ I could legally drive again may 1. And I did. I walk 3000 steps daily. Walk my 3 dogs. Read. Laugh. Listen to inspiring music.

And yes. My GI issues are better. I am working on that too. Lots of water. Pulled the caffeine. Reduced NSAID dosage. Drink green tea. Will be seeing gastroenterologist on November 6

Good Morning Dan!
What a lovely way to start my day — opening the community and finding this discussion you started.
I completely agree with your mindset: epilepsy is one part of who we are, not the whole of us. We can still achieve so much and live richly, even with epilepsy in the picture.
There's an inspirational film I watched not long ago that captures exactly this spirit: Srikanth (2024). It tells the true story of a visually impaired entrepreneur who refuses to be defined by his disability and achieves the extraordinary through determination and willpower.
I believe one of the greatest keys is keeping the fear of the next seizure at bay — rather than allowing that fear to quietly take hold of our lives. And that is precisely what you did in the midst of multiple seizures. That takes real courage. Congratulations!
And what a stunning photo with that full moon! May it bring good energy to each and every one of you!
Chris
