Ideas for getting mucus Out

Posted by meleana808 @meleana808, 2 days ago

Had my CT scan yesterday there has been an increase in mucus compared to 6months ago. I also been diagnosed with pseudomonosis. (Which I inhaled tobramycin for about 16mo til I started getting increased ringing in my ears). Dr stopped toby with nothing to replace it, said there was nothing else.
Drs suggestions continue ACTS, with albuterol inhaler, nebulizing albuterol & 5 or 7% saline and use your vest. Previously within this routine still did not produce any sputum
Any other suggestions on loosening and espelling this mucus? I have read mullein tea or a form of mucinex might help.
Ty for sharing your experiences and knowledge

I have to say, NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) really made a difference for me. I used to not be able to get the mucous out, but once I started taking the NAC, I'm pretty much always able to get something up and out!

Mucinex Max (not DM) it has 1200mg Guifenesin helps to open airways and help bring junk up from the lungs.

I’m curious about the NAC. I’ve heard mixed reviews on it and I’ve never heard of Dr.s mentioning it. But I’m sure it’s because not FDA approved or some other regulatory reason. Anyway did you notice a difference right away? I’ve heard some people say it took 2-4 weeks to see a change in expelling the mucus.

Hello, meleana808. Just a thought after reading your symptoms. Mucus was trapped in my lungs for a full year after undergoing radiation for a type of throat cancer tumor. I was on antibiotics all that time, which kept me alive--barely. It felt like I was drowning, and toward the end I would have had it not been for surgery. It ended up that my vocal cords are paralyzed, so I had a tracheotomy. It sounds horrible, but it is such a blessing. The mucus is right there to be easily coughed/cleaned out. You would think that having paralyzed vocal cords would mean a person is unable to talk, eat, or drink, but this is not true. The only way to find out why the mucus is stuck, is to have a Nasal Endoscopy. If you do not find out why the mucus is trapped, it can lead to lung infections. I pray you find the answer. Best wishes to you.

My pulmonologist mentioned nebulizing NAC . I had taken the oral NAC but it didn’t seem to help. Anyone have success nebulizing it?

I have nebulized NAC (Mucomyst) but didn’t notice a difference in bringing up mucus. But because we are all different, you may want to try it and see if it helps you. Good luck

Exercise before nebulizing always helps me.

I nebulized 7% saline for 9 months after diagnosis before I could expel any sputum. What made the difference for me was using the autogenic drainage app (free) on my phone after nebulizing.
