Worse Neuropathy After EMG Test?

Posted by joslyn @joslyn, Jan 8, 2022

I had an EMG test done four days ago, and my neuropathy pain has been MUCH MUCH worse the last three days. Anyone else? Suddenly, none of my creams, meds, and devices work to reduce the burning and tingling. What can I do???

Hello all, my name is Kim and I have read many of your posts regarding peripheral neuropathy and I am so sorry to hear the pain and discomfort you are having. About four years ago I was diagnosed with CIDP and it was miserable, pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness to the point of difficulty walking. I have to say thank GOD for my neurologist! My diagnosis was confirmed by EMG, lumbar puncture and MRI. I was immediately started in gabapentin at very high doses and IVIG infusions every two weeks. The gabapentin made very very drowsy but did relieve the pain. Over the last few years my gabapentin dose was decreased and I started myself on ALA. I also have attempted to decrease my sugar and carb intake.
Today I continue with my gabapentin, IVIG, and ALA. My pain level has really diminished and I have to say thank you to my neurologist and my infusion nurses… I pray that you all find relief.
Kim

Alpha lipoic acid, it's an OTC supplement that my GP suggested I take a few months ago. It seems to have taken the edge off of the pain when I'm having a really bad night.

Both feet are totally numb. I don't know if it's from the test. They are much worse.

Are you drinking alcohol. That stuff stops B12 absorption.
B12 makes red blood cells and MYELIN. Myelin protects our nerves. Your nerves I bet have lost all their protection.

It’s worse because the machine affects your nerves. Try magnesium with hemp from Amazon. Magnesium helps because it’s a muscle relaxer and with hemp small amounts help with the pain.

So sorry to hear this, however it just confirms my belief that doctors today just want to rush you in and rush you out. Most are governed by large corps, more patients in a day more money in their pockets. Also, could it be DEI? Neurology is a medical field that is very complicated and changing daily, Drs cant keep up, my opinion, or just dont care. Maybe AI is the answer.... Best Wishes to you...........

I share your sentiments about doctors. Also, today I asked my primary care doctor if research was being undertaken to find a cure for neuropathy and he said yes it is being done. Then, why do we never hear about it? We do learn of other areas of research for other diseases. Are we a forgotten group? It sure seems that today's doctors have almost zero bedside manners. If anything, I come out of these doctors visits more troubled than before I went in. I seem to get better support and info from this support group.

Hi Joslyn
Yes I had EMG and have had terrible leg pain for months afterwards, intense ache in Anterior tibialis that eased after weeks, and searing burning pains in posterior tibialis left and Gracilis right that still bites now

I've had 3 EMG tests done by 3 different neurologists and never noticed anything unusual afterwards.

I have had quite a few EMG/NCS
diagnostic procedures and have never experienced pain or aftereffects.
