Brochiectasis cough

Posted by charisscurry @charisscurry, May 8 9:43pm

My mom was diagnosed with bronchiectasis in December of 2024. She coughs frequently. She uses the sodium chloride and albuterol nebulizers. She also uses the vest. Any other treatments that may help her not cough as frequently?

Do you know the best way to clear her airway?

Since your mother has been diagnosed with bronchiectasis consider airway clearance. To maximize airway clearance she'll need a compressor, nebulizer and hypertonic saline. All are available without a prescription. Below are links to nebulizer and compressor, both of which have been recommended by NJH. Hypertonic saline (3% or 7%) can be purchased on Amazon.

Most recently she had to be hospitalized for 5 days for Rhinovirus and pneumonia. After she gets clearance, going to to get her the pneumonia shot. Not sure why the reoccurring pneumonia. Has anyone experienced this?

Scoop is correct. I've had pneumonia 5 times in the last year. Hospitalized twice because of severity. Also, had Rhinovirus with it. Clearing the airways is the best thing. I use my nebulizer 3 to 4 times a day and my Aerobika. Because of the scar tissue in my lungs, I have from my chronic MAC which I've had since 2016, I am really susceptible to pneumonia and viruses. The bacterias get trapped and grow in the phlegm under the scar tissue. I wasn't diagnosed with Bronchiectasis until 11/24 after a hospitalization. I wear a mask whenever I go outside the house to help prevent breathing bacterias. Even then...some slip through. Airway clearance is key...

Yes, sometimes I cough during the day. Often a cough can be a signal that there's still phlegm to expel. If I go on a coughing jag and am at home I do another airway clearance session. Does that answer your question?

I cough a lot throughout the day. I have a major coughing fit at least 1x a day. It helps me to use nebulizer 3 to 4x's a day. My cough always produces phlegm. So, when I don't cough, I know to use aerobika because I know there is build up happening. I prefer to have the cough because when I don't I can get lazy and forget to do a treatment or drink my water. Then I always end up really sick.

The Aerobika really helps me clear congestion. With phlegm cleared I cough less.

Hello, all. I have a related question. What is the difference between the acapella and the aerobika? It’s getting more and more difficult to cough up the junk. Thank you for your replies.

The Aerobika can be disassembled and thoroughly cleaned, while the Acapella cannot.
