Abuse of Opioids takes away from all the good it can do
Hi, I'm Jaime- 68 year old male having chronic pain for 30 years.
I've had 14 sports related surgeries that began at age 18 and have just gone through 2 Posterior cervical decompression with multi level fusions during the past 18 months. I have been to numerous pain specialists, tried every supplement advertised, have every gadget that is offered online, and have had no less than 25 cortisone shots, knee replacement, epidurals etc. Throughout the 30 years, I have found that Opioids are the only thing that has allowed me a quality of life. Side effects? Show me a medication that doesn't have any. I had to be extremely disciplined to only take as prescribed. If a pain doctor doesn't offer opioids, they should find another profession. I take Hydrocodone 10/325 4 times a day max and less if not needed, Nobody seems to defend the use of opioids, but if you don't abuse it, it could be a life saver, not a killer

This is well written.i agree totally. You were able to express so well, what needs to be understood. If over the counter helps you, then you don't have the kind of pain many have. I am still waiting to hear o ft the alternatives to opioids for what I call real pain.
I am sorry that so many people in pain are stuck thinking there is no help available. As I have written previously I am prescribed buprenorphine patches 20mcg x7 days (I change my patch every 7 days) for my chronic OA pain, peripheral neuropathy, chronic pain syndrome. I had been on T&C #4 for 15 years, switched to morphine sulfate for 10 years and after these failed I was placed on buprenorphine. This drug in other formulations and doses is prescribed to treat drug addiction. In the patch formulation and small dose released 24/7 relieves my chronic pain. I have attached some information for you to educate yourselves and obtain adequate pain relief. Let me know if I can offer assistance?

“They’re” taking this opioid crisis to the wrong group of people. Chronic pain people are doing things they never thought they’d have to do. Therein lies the overdoses. After my second knee replacement in April (not to mention all the other surgeries I’ve had) I’m disappointed that even my surgeon can only prescribe for six weeks. The hydrocodone they now have me on barely touches the pain. I want a copy of the new prescribing rules. I’m not looking forward to going to pain management where they give you a pee cup as soon as you walk through the door. To add insult to injury, I also have Tardive dyskinesia which is a movement disorder I got from taking Abilify. The muscle movements are very painful and there’s no stopping them. I need a referral for every specialist from my primary doctor.
Jamie,
I feel your pain and frustration ! Innocent people have to suffer. I used to have Comp. What a nightmare. I was with a pain mgmt. who used Hydro morphine ER 12mg. This is long acting I take at night and I have the same Hydro. script that you do. I have so many issues with my spine the most recent being 5 thoracic fractures. I have DD, OP,OA,Severe Scoliosis on and on…… Oh I forgot I am 68. Sending 🙏🌤️
Opioids are very effective pain relievers, and can work when nothing else does. Unfortunately, they have some serious side effects when taken orally. One; opioid very quickly slow down and even halt the peristaltic action of the alimentary canal. Over time this can cause digestive difficulties and severe constipation to the point of bowel blockage. Two; opioids are now prescribed mostly for short term use. Used for extended periods they can create a physical and mental dependency and even addition.-and that's where they get the bad rap. With dependency, if stopped abruptly most will suffer withdrawal and put up with the suffering because they realize it will soon pass. But, if someone becomes addicted they will develop drug seeking activity, doing almost anything to avoid the agony of the physical and mental withdrawal if they don't have anymore narcotics I can't and don't condemn anyone's long term responsible opioid use for pain management, I did it for years, but happily' I found it possible to get off that merry go round and I did and I am much better off for it.
Yes the state of Ca notified my neurologist not to prescribe tramadol and send me to pain management. Got the pee cup 1st visit. Tried cymbalta got dehydrated and with savella high blood pressure. After 60 these meds are not easy to get on.
rockon, you are totally off base! Have you ever had 24/7 pain before? Are they habit forming? Yes, but if you didn't take them, as prescribed ,you could not live from day to day!
As for digestive problems, that's what they make light laxative to help with it!
I always laugh when they talk about Ambien being addictive! Yet how many adds do you see every night about sleeping drugs!
Any medicine can be addictive!
If you use them correctly and under a doctors care they can offer you a good quality of Life!
So your thinking, we should Ban Alcohol! Used incorrectly it also can be addictive! And be deadly for both the user and others!
Using any drug takes the proper mindset and discipline!
Sundance aka RB
sundance, you misread what I wrote! If you care to read the last two sentences again starting from "I can't and don't condemn".
I agree with you Sundancer. I do hate taking opiods, yes they constipate and you have to take care of yourself for it but for legitimate use they do offer some qualitiy of life.
I've been seeing pain management for 20 years. I get 2 scripts. One is filled that day and the other put on my file at pharmacy. I don't pee every time I go. It's a random list that comes out for the days patients. Most people think they are looking for other illicit drugs taken but it's actually to make sure you are being compliant with your own medication. It's to make sure people aren't selling them instead of taking them. I have no problem giving a urine sample. I do as I'm supposed to.
