Has anyone had Bordetella Bronchiseptica

Posted by heathert @heathert, May 23, 2025

Has anyone had Bordetella Bronchiseptica show on their sputum results? I have been told to take Azithromyzin, however I cannot find anything online suggesting azith for this. Can anyone help me with this or give me any info in this bug. Thanks Heather

@heathert Oh my, that is the bacteria that causes kennel cough in dogs. Do you have or work around puppies? It is hardly ever found in humans.

Is it causing you any symptoms? If not, did they do a repeat culture to confirm it wasn't just an artifact?
And, as @pacathy said, with a rare bug like this, it is best they do a sensitivity test to see which antibiotic will kill it.

Oh and I am getting a popping gurgling going on in my chest when I lye down in bed, I have now bouth an electric bed and lye almost upright but If I do not raise it high enough I the the wierd gurgling again, it doesnt last longer than around 20mins, so strange. And cough a bit in the morn and at night but definatly not alot like pertussis.

What you describe with the sounds in your chest is most likely sputum that maybe kind of "stuck" in your airways. Are you do doing airway clearance? If not, do! Below is a great video by Dr. McShane of Tyler Texas on airway clearance.

@cwal, yes I do do those things(excl the vest) including just before bed, it feels more like when I have a bleed but i do not think it is always a bleed, so odd, its when i breath out that I make the noise and get the pop/gurgle. Thanks for the video tho it was very interesting. Heather

Whenever I have had a bleed in the past it would almost always happen when I laid down to go to bed. As soon as I laid back, I would get the gurgle effect you describe and then would need to get up and cough up blood. Then it would resolve. For some reason this no longer occurs or has not in a long time even though I cannot say I am getting better in any way. Every once in awhile I will get that gurgle effect and it is not a bleed.

But the good thing is that no MAC intracellulare showed up on my cultures after 11 years of positive cultures!!! I have been concentrating on nebbing (pari eflow, no tubing)and huff coughing and good cleaning of nebs etc and my MAC numbers have been decreasing in the few years and now mo more MAC (and I was not on any medications for MAC for the last 3 years, but for 7 years prior) for me the medications kind of kept it under control but did not get rid of it, but nebbing and clearing my small airways did! I would recommend this to everyone. Heather

This is such encouraging to know of how you are managing the disease. Where do you buy Pari eflow without tube? I looked it up and it is very expensive. Do you have a link for it? May I know what is your airway clearance techniques? What % of saline do you use? Thank you.

@sweethighland Yes I was so excited and surprised when my dr said no MAC had shown up on my tests!!The Pari is expensive unfortunatly but a great machine, I have had mine for along time now , but think I bought it of the Pari website. I use 7% saline 2X a day , I also do the Huff cough technique and the autogenic squeeze, you can look these up online. The Pari eflow is such a compact, quick, easy , long lasting machine to use and uses no tubing which is great, I definatly recommend it, especially now!

Yes, they are very expensive. They cost between $800 to $1000 dollars each and instructions recommend they be changed every year. Yikes!

@cwal No You do not have to change the whole unit yearly just the handpiece yearly and change the mesh piece 6 monthly, I think the handset incl the mesh head is around $200 $NZ, cant remember how much the mesh is on its own, no idea what prices in the USA would be. But the ebase controller and power supply last for many years, I bought mine in 2017 and it is like new. I know of someone who had their pari for 20yrs, would have been an older model tho. It has been so worth the money for me.

Still a chunk of change but my eflow was around $600, as it was an extra 25% off during a special. Have not looked back, much easier and faster and quieter than the compressor machines. I guess they all have their place.

Well, I may call the company and find out all the details and compare costs. I did not know about the changing out the different parts. Thanks!
