Can one stop taking prolia after the first shot?

Posted by imatine @imatine, Mar 6, 2021

Hello everyone, my mom is 84 year old and she got osteoporosis since 8 years. She took prolia last October. She started to feel a lot of pain in her legs now. I am thinking she shouldn't take the 2nd shot but I am afraid of the consequences. Did anyone here stop the prolia at an early stage!? If so what happened? Thank you

Same thing happened to me. I took Prolia in January. By April, I could not take the pain in my legs and I have a high tolerance for pain. I refused the second shot. I have severe oseoporosis-3.7 in the dexa scan. Doctor said to increase calcium intake, eat more cheese, keep walking and exercising, no bending or lifting- and see what the next test results are. The doctors don't like it, and say it's risky, but the Prolia is dibilating. If the osteoporosis gets worse, I will try another type of injection if I can, but they really all have side effects.

I hope she finds something to help.

Hi,
I'm on Prolia for the past 2 years ...one injection in February and the 2nd one in August. I'm getting extremely anxious about having this substance in my body. My side effects so far are not too bad...but I am concerned about continuing on it. I need dental work and I believe that is very dangerous. I am also experiencing muscular pains in my legs at night and aim very tired. I'm 62 and I don't think I should be feeling so tired and also so stiff after sitting or driving for a while.
I would respectfully like to ask advice on what I should replace Prolia with as I have read that it is not possible to just stop it.
My doctor did not mention any side effects when she prescribed this for me.
I wonder was there any point in taking it at all or was it better if I never had taken it .
Thanks for reading this.

I had 1 infection of Prolia in June of ‘25. My next one is scheduled for Dec. 15th.
Within the first 3 days I broke out with a terrible rash on my arms that started to spread to my legs. In just 3 weeks time, I have had 3 rashes!
My teeth hurt, my jaw hurts, my skin itches and my bones really hurt.
I have osteoarthritis, spondoloysis and scoliosis of the spine. My T score is -4.2 for my spine and -4.3 for my hip. I have bone spurs as well.
I detest this drug and am researching other ways to deal with my bone health.
I will be 67 and have always been very active. That all changed after 1 shot.
Prolia is a wicked drug that becomes very difficult to transition off if you have taken more than 1 shot.

Jacksonville, FL... Prolia Rebound Effect/Results From Studies Are Sobering
Prolia 1 injection w/horrendous side effects. I wasn't told about the termination of Prolia without "irreversible side effects: multiple vertebral fractures and rapid reduction of bone mineral density" from my Endocrinologist. A double-edged sword for sure! And the time you have after termination to take action is concerning. The 3 medical staff I have spoken to about the "rebound effect" from Prolia are not familiar with it.
Anyone, please...some actual first hand experience with this???

I’ve had 1 shot with horrific side effects as well. I’ve read that you can transition off after only 1 shot.

I took one shot of Prolia in January of last year with no problem. My neuropathy got worse with painful leg cramps and burning. I have severe osteoporosis. I refuse to take another shot of any kind. My doctors are not happy, but suggested to increase calcium, eat more cheese and calcium products. I've had no side effects. And when I get hairline fractures they quickly heal. My next dexa scan in in October, so we shall see.
I'm sure your mom will be fine, but always check with the doctors.
