Nocturnal Leg Cramps - Help!
Does anyone have a suggestion to help deal with foot/ankle/leg cramps in the middle of the night? I take plenty of calcium and magnesium and am thinking that I need to increase my potassium intake. Topical lotions (Theraworx, Tiger Balm, etc.) have not helped. I hope this is a good day for whoever is reading this! Sue

Hyland’s Leg Cramps pills and restful legs pills for restless legs has been a miracle for me for 20+ years. 1000 year old medicine.
It shouldn’t have side effects and costs less than $10 to try it. Nothing to lose.
My Drs said nonsense but they had no solution.
I didn't know this, thank you!
I start the day with an apple, pear, navel orange, and banana. I guess I've got my potassium covered!
All the best.

I had this problem as well, night cramps in my hamstrings and calves - sudden, sharp, and painful. After an MRI it was revealed my lower back muscles were very tight, occasionally putting pressure on my sciatic nerve and causing the painful cramps.
The stretching greatly resolved the problem. Find a way to stretch your lower back safely. You should be able to find something with an Internet search that will work for you.
A doctor told me that several NFL teams drink "Pickel Juice" to prevent cramps.
I have used it for over thirty years.
I keep Pickel Juice in the fridge.
Some great suggestions on this email string--Hopefully something works for you.

I agree. Drink plenty of water. I always keep a bottle of water by my bed and when I get then I drink half of the water in one gulp and it usually helps every time.
Vitamin k2 in Managing Nocturnal Leg Cramps: A Randomized Clinical Trial. Tan J, Zhu JAMA International Medicine 2024; 184 (12): 1443-1447. My doctor found this for me. Please show this to your doctor to find the correct dose for you. You have to be careful if you also take a blood thinner. Also there are many prescription drugs that can cause restless legs. You can ask your pharmacy if any of your medications can cause restless legs. SSRIs, some blood pressure drugs can cause it, for example.
I meant leg cramps, not restless legs.
Thanks Luke.
Very interesting. I'm guessing the salt content of pickle juice helps the body retain water and prevent cramps. Wish I had known that back when I ran marathons!
Thank you!

My husband sometimes has terrible cramps, frequently in his thighs. He drinks pickle juice, but not sure how much is ok, since it has a lot of sodium. It is especially bad during summer months when he bends a lot working in the garden.
My leg cramps are caused by compression in my lumbar spine. I have degenerative disc disease and my leg cramps start from my spine. I am too early for another lumbar spine surgery and I am too late for more Cortizone ( which does the trick) improves that it’s damaged nerves from my spine that are causing the neuropathy and the radiculopathy and the atrophy and cramps. I was not sleeping anymore and I was up every 30 minutes applying ointment and taking drugs. One day I decided to get on that stationary bike. I bought three years ago and ride for an hour hour and a half most mornings. I started at five minutes and worked myself up to 90. Sometimes I just don’t feel like getting on the bike in the morning and I’m getting used to that. I can’t on some mornings. When I don’t do it for a few days, the neuropathy comes back. I am having such a great outcome and sleeping really well that I will be continuing with the exercise. I already walk twice a day, but it wasn’t enough because the dog slows me down. Exhausting myself helps me sleep deeper and prevents the pain from waking me up. I suggest some kind of exercise where you get worn out. Unlike a couple minutes at PT where they mostly focus on resistance exercises. It also really helps to go to the doctor and find out the source of your neuropathy in leg cramps. When I was younger, vitamin K helped when I was pregnant I got a lot of leg cramps, but actually they were all stemming from the beginning of my spinal Degeneration
