How long for a complete itinerary?
My son was accepted to Mayo Clinic, and our initial appointment was booked about 6 days ago. We travel in July. Currently there is only one day of appointments in the portal. How long does it typically take for the full itinerary to be completed? Right now if only shows an appointment with an internal medicine doctor, bloodwork, psychiatrist, and overnight pulse oximeter test. My understanding from his doctor at home is he should have several days with different specialists, especially considering all the different things he has going on. But I’m getting a little concerned this is all they have planned for him. If it is, it’s not really worth the travel 🫤

@summermaples, as @jlharsh suggested, Mayo Clinic offers a service to help with airline bookings. It is called Mayo Clinic Patient Travel Services. Patient Travel Service can make flight reservations ($25 fee per reservation, up to $50 for a family), manage changes to your travel itinerary, make hotel reservations, and arrange ground transportation, including airport shuttles, limo service or car rental reservations. In addition Mayo Clinic offers a free Concierge Service that can be a great help ease the burden as you prepare for your first visit to Mayo Clinic. They can help with things like getting you set up with the patient portal called Patient Online Services, narrow your hotel options based on your budget and individual needs, recommend restaurants personalized to your preferences or diet and help with directions to and around Mayo Clinic, including shuttle bus schedules, etc. https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/minnesota/concierge-services
I agree with @jlharsh to call the Internal Medicine Department to see if you can find out more. You may also be interested in these related discussions about first visits to Mayo Clinic https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/traveling-to-mayo-clinic/?search=first+visit#discussion-listview
There is a concierge service at Mayo and besides assisting with places to stay while you are there, they provide assistance in transportation needs. Here is the link: https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/minnesota/concierge-services
You can call them, too 507-538-8438, they were very helpful.
It took several weeks for all of my appointments to be loaded into the portal. As hard as it is, try to be patient and give them time to review everything so they can define all the appointments needed.
Thank you! This gives me hope regarding some potential planning!
Excellent point @ginabassford! I’ve had times I popped on my portal and unexpectedly found a scheduled appointment. What the heck? Ends up they were in the middle of this exact process. I imagine @summermaples is super ready. It is so difficult to wait.
(Wished I hadn’t seen it-sorta😀)
Question... today the little packet with the printed patient appointment guide arrived in the mail. It reflects what is in the portal, just the one day of appts. Did you continue getting those mailed as your appointments were added? Or does the mailing indicate they don't plan to add more until we're there?
@summermaples, really good question. It is still possible that other appointments may be added either before or once you are evaluated at Mayo Clinic.
The printed Patient Appointment Guide is to give you clear instructions and information about the appointments and/or procedures you will be having. I hope you find them clear and helpful.
During your evaluation at Mayo Clinic, additional appointments may be made. You will work with your team to schedule any additional appointments as convenient for you as possible, either in the same visit or a return visit.
My experience, @summermaples is that this is your schedule until you meet with the first doc and they figure out what is next. Sorry. Is there a cover letter than gives any idea how long you could be there? There should be a phone number you can call and ask. Don’t be shy, they want you to ask your questions.
Are you still thinking about flying?
Yes! They called last week to say they were adding a phone appt, but when I went to the portal, they had added two. I also see they have added NINE appointments for me on 7/14 before my surgery (extended myectomy) on 7/15. I keep checking back. The thing to remember is that they know what is needed and will make sure it happens.
@ginabassford
FYI, if phone appointment is prior to any actual in person appointments, it may be to go over all your medications and allergies, etc... They do that ahead of time so it is complete prior to first appointment. It would be a good idea to have your list of medications or actual medication bottles available for that call.
