Wet Macular Degeneration: What treatment helps you?

Posted by lvon @lvon, Jul 22, 2020

I have recently tried a different injection for my Wet Mac and was almost cleared up and was worstend by this drug. I have gone back on my previous drug and cannot get any satisfying results. Has anyone had this experience?

Are you bleeding every month or does your doctor believe it's the best practice to inject whether you are or not

No bleeding; I have fluid, hence, wet macular degeneration. When I stretch it to longer periods of time, the bubble gets larger and I cannot see well.

There are injections for Dry AMD. Your retina doctor may use a specific medicine. Make sure doctor is a good retina doctor and deals only in retina treatment.

Not all “dry AMD” patients qualify for these injections. No current injection reverses dry AMD or improves vision — unlike for wet AMD. There are no shots available for dry intermediate AMD.

It is wet AMD 🙁
Thank you for sharing! I really hope that I respond well too! I’m not sure what they are starting me on but I will definitely have these on hand to ask about.

So as I understand there is not cure or reversal of this right?

I'm nearing completion of my second year of treatment. As I understand, you are correct about no cure available. Whether we see some 'reversal' may be more a matter of interpretation. I no longer see the bend in straight objects like phone poles or road striping, and I definitely am not 'tearing' or 'watering' as much as I did before treatment - especially when reading. I guess I'd call those reversals?

My vision is 20/20. My condition happened to be caught at my annual visit to the optometrist.

My retinal specialist at Mayo-Roch started me on Avastin - both eyes. One eye has stopped leaking/bleeding. The other did not and we began treating that eye with Eyelea. Last visit with the specialist showed a big reduction in leaking in the second eye. My hope/goal is to get to longer periods between injections, of course. As I'm treating both eyes, we inject both at the same time & interval - sort of a lowest common denominator method. You must now be around your first major testing after starting injections. I hope you get good results.

The only injections I've had are Avastin. I guess they're working okay, since I've had no progression. My very first visit my doctor recommended Preservision2 twice a day, which I've been taking religiously. They are expensive pills, but Costco has good sales on them. So far I've had no vision changes, except dry eyes, which apparently was caused by Systane eye drops. She said I was reacting to the preservatives, so I changed to a drop with no preservatives and the dry eyes (and bloodshot wet eyes) have cleared up. The new drops are expensive, but necessary.

@mjj You can get your eye vitamins at Amazon or eBay cheaper than Costco or Sam’s!

I wait patiently for the Preservision Areds2 to go on sale at Costco, then I purchase them. The sale price is about $38 for 210 capsules, which is cheaper than Amazon. I go by cost per capsule.
Thanks for the ideas, however. I don't have a Sam's Club here, but I will look for their website.
