Blood Clots from Chemo?

Posted by gamaryanne @gamaryanne, May 6 9:00pm

I am currently on Naliri. Scans say my liver tumor has shrunk About 50% and lung module is no longer visible.
However, they have identified 2 blood clots. One in my lung and one in my liver.

Has anyone experienced blood clots ?
Did you do anything other than take Eloquis?

Sorry to hear about that gamaryanne. Got a blood clot in my lung after a bronchoscopy last year. Drs told me blood clots common in chemo and pancreatic cancer patients. It was small so I got on Eloquis and still am. They also told me that travel in car or airplane (places where you are sitting for a lengthy amount of time) for over 4 hours can also cause clots. Blood clot went away quickly after that; no problems since. I’m not sure if drinking lots of water helps that type of hydration, but I do drink lots!

I meant dehydration; misspell.

My husband developed blood clots in his lungs and legs. He had been off chemo for about 2 1/2 months when the blood clots surfaced. He was hospitalized, put on Eloquis, and had a filter placed to keep blood clots from his legs from circulating. The oncologist said blood clots can be caused by chemo and from the cancer itself. He was a bleed risk due to a radiation induced upper GI bleed that put him in the hospital with severe anemia. We were faced with choosing which situation was worse, the blood clots or the bleeding potential. He was supposed to restart chemo, but was too weak from the anemia and a severe case of sepsis he was still recovering from. The team of doctors on his case believed the bleed risk was the greater problem and he was taken off Eloquis, a very tough decision. He passed away about 2 weeks later from pulmonary embolism. It happened very suddenly though he had been deteriorating very rapidly in the weeks prior. He had started hospice care just 5 days earlier.
I hope that Eloquis works for you, as it should. My husband had developed so many complications that it wasn’t possible. Prayers and hugs for you and all the others battling this terrible disease.

@gamaryanne , are you on "NALIRI" (nano-liposomal irinotecan) by itself, or "NALIRIFOX" (Folfirinox with Naliri replacing the conventional, legacy irinotecan)?

@gamaryanne I take it you weren’t on any blood thinners before your Naliri? How are you doing now? From my PET scan (the MRI didn’t show anything or else it was read well) I have a new small lesion in my liver and possibly tumor or lesion in gallbladder. My docs last clinical notes say he’s considering putting me on Nal, but with 5-FU. But that chemo was before the PET scan results which I got yesterday. I don’t see many cases where pancan metastasizes to gallbladder . May ask for biopsy to be sure unless there’s some other blood test for it (my CA19-9 already elevated so not that one). Hope you had a grand day yesterday!

For me, they did not add the platin drug. At least for now. So I’m on Naliri which involves the pump wed-friday.

@mnewland99
Naliri includes 5fu.
The difference is that the irinotecan is a lipsomal version.
The side effects are similar to folfuri. But it seems to be working. I’m hoping for two more rounds to get my CA19-9 back to normal OR to have the lesion small enough for SBRT. I will find out Thursday how small the area must be for SBRT. Hoping it’s already there !
As an aside, my surgeon removed my gallbladder when he was working on my liver. He said it was useless and just another area to attract cancer. Maybe just get it out?!

My gallbladder was removed at last liver surgery. Doctor felt it was a problem waiting to happen and said I didn’t need it anyway. I’ve been fine without it. Naliri does include 5fu pump. It’s onivyde, leucovorin, and flourorcil(sp). For some mutations they add oxyplatin. We are holding off on that . It has done well shrinking my liver tumor to a state that SBRT would be effective. However, I would be required to be off chemo about 8 weeks. As much as I dislike it, I feel I need to continue clearing my system before a break. Maybe 2 months of normal CA19-9 scores?
